Main Image

The woman has no direct eye

contact which is unusual, she is
looking at the balloons or the
masthead which suggests maybe
this is linking to the genre of the
magazine. As she is holding the
balloons it is different to other
magazines which are usually just
the singer themselves or their
band. Another link to this genre of
music magazine. The costume as
well she is in gives a ‘indie’ feel to
this magazine as well as the hair
being made to look natural and
the hat on top. You get a festival
feel from this magazine which
runs along indie magazines.
‘BLURT’, connotations of
gossip being let out. In a
black bold font makes it
stand out and doesn’t clash
with any other colours on
the page.
Anchorage Text

‘Dare’ is an enticing word, when someone

dares you, you usually do it because you
don’t want to show weakness. With this it’s
enticing us to buy the magazine to read
about Jenny Lewis. Also her name is
highlighted in pink and stands out. This
colour also matches the pink balloons
which give a feminine feel to this magazine.
The language used in this
magazine seems formal but
gives hints of informality
with ‘dolled’ being used
instead of a ‘makeover’,
which would then give the
magazine quite a glamorous
style to it ,so, I think they use
some words to give it that
roughness. This then links to
the genre.
The colour scheme for this
magazine is mainly black
and pink. This adds a
feminine feel to the
magazine. Also with other
bright colours like blue
(matching the blue on her
top and the ribbon round
the balloons) and yellow, it
seems quite a bright
magazine with a ‘hippy’ feel
to it. That’s why I think I
would class this under the
indie genre and this
magazine would sell to
women of the ages between
15-19.

Anchorage Text

I think the
audience for this
magazine would
be men of the
ages between 17-
25.

‘Q’- In white font with a red

block. Red has the connotation
of danger and this relates to the
style of the magazine. It also
gives the affect of it being
smashed which links with the
main image.
Anchorage Text

‘MUSE’ the biggest text

on the page except from
the masthead which
indicates MUSE being
the main article of the
magazine and relating to
the picture. Underneath
MUSE is says ‘Matt
Bellamy is out of control’
which indicates to us
that he is linked to the
band Muse- maybe the
main one out of the
band but the article is
about him.
The main images is Matt Bellamy
looking at the masthead which
looks like he’s just smashed with
the guitar in his hand. He looks
like a rock person as of the guitar,
the black outfit and the black
eyeliner. He also has red on his
jacket which links with the main
colour from the masthead. His
eye contact is also at the
masthead which indicates the
attention is more to the magazine
rather than the audience.
Generally the colour
scheme is red, white and
black. Red can signify love
or danger and I think for
this magazine danger
applies with the darkness of
the black- showing the rock
genre. The white however
has connotations of purity
and being angelic so maybe
its hinting that rock isn’t
always as deep and dark as
it’s let on to be. The white
also stands out as the main
writing font colour and
block colour and red is used
now and again to highlight
important bits on the front
cover that they want you to
notice. For example ‘200’
and ‘plus’, catches your eye
more- buzz words.
Almost showing off it’s ‘THE UK’s BIGGEST
MUSIC MAGAZINE’. White font that links
to the masthead.
Top of the Pops Magazine

I would say that the target

audience for this magazine is
girls of the ages 8-12. I think
this as of the colours used, the
images used and the articles
advertised.
Masthead

The name of the magazine is ‘top of the

pops’ It is lower case which suggest
informal language. Also it’s the same as the
logo using the curvy lines and the pink and
white which then relates it more to girls
because of the colour pink connoting girls.
Main Image
The main image is 3 boys all having
direct address with the audience who I
think are girls of the ages between 7-12.
One of the boys are further in front than
the others- maybe highlighting the
importance of him in the band is bigger
than the rest. They are all in casual
clothing- the boy at the front is wearing
a leather jacket which gives him a
‘coolness’ about him.
Anchorage text The text is across the main picture which
indicates it is about them. The block colour
behind is pink with the writing on top in
white except for the bands name which is in
yellow and the biggest writing on the page.
This indicates that they are the main focus
of the magazine. Also, ‘OMG’ is informal
language which is suggesting it is for a
younger relaxed audience. Hearts are used
by the band name which suggest love for
this boy band. Indicating that girls of this
age are at the age of fancying boys and older
boy bands.
The comic like text on the page shows this
is a magazine for younger people and the
page is quite busy with different pictures,
texts and fonts which is unusual when
compared with other magazine covers.
Barcode, date, price, issue number, and also
at the top a website address, showing that
they are trying to get to different audiences
who are more likely to go on to the website
rather than buy the magazine.
The main colours used on
this page are pink, white,
baby blue and yellow. Pink
is connotes femininity
where as the contrasting
blue connotes masculinity.
The blue is also used as a
backdrop highlighting the
main image and the little
baby boy at the bottom. It
also links with Zac Efron’s
top in another picture
which suggests it’s
highlighting the men on
the page.
