Smoke Point Measurement in Kerosene

This document describes an experiment to determine the smoke point of a kerosene sample. The smoke point is defined as the maximum flame height in millimeters at which a kerosene sample burns without smoking under controlled conditions. The procedure involves soaking a wick in the kerosene sample, placing it in a candle, lighting the candle and adjusting the flame height until a smoky tail appears, then lowering it until the smoky tail just disappears. Multiple observations of the flame height are taken and averaged to obtain the smoke point.

Smoke point
Definition :

The smoke point is the maximum flame height in

millimeters at which a kerosene sample burns
without smoking when determined in the
apparatus in the specific condition
Significance :
This is the height of the flame before
smoking starts ,when the kerosene is burned
in the a standards lamp under controlled
conditions
Procedure :

1- Soak a piece of extracted and dried wick not less than

125 mm in the sample and place it in the wick tube of the
candle .

2- Put 20ml of the sample in to the clean and dry candle .

3- place the wick tube in the candle and screw it .

4- Cut the wick horizontally 6mm from the end of the

candle (use a clean razor blade or other sharp instrument)

5-insert the candle in the lamp .

6- Light the candle and adjust the flame and allow
the lamp to burn for 5 min .

7- Rise the candle unit a smoky tail appears and

then lowers the candle slowly until appointed tip
just disappears leaving a very slightly blunted
flame nearest 5 min .

8-Make tree separator observations by repeating

the flame appearance.
9- If these values vary over than 1mm , repeat the
test with a fresh sample and another wick .
