Identify the following input devices

2D Scanner 3D Scanner Bar code scanner QR code scanner

[4 Marks]
What is an input device?
An input device is a hardware equipment used to provide data and control signals to an information
processing system such as a computer.

What is a direct data entry input device?

A direct data entry input device is a device that read data from a source that's provided and
transferred it directly to the computer system.

2D Scanners
Describe step-by step how you would use a 2D scanner to scan in a document and
save it as a .PDF file.
Include an image and use the terms glass panel, bright light, scan head, series of
mirrors, charged couple device (CCD), and pixels in your answer.
Firstly, the document is placed on the glass panel of the 2D scanner. Secondly, a bright light is shined to
illuminate the document. After that, the scan head is moved slowly across the document to scan the whole
document. Then a series of mirrors are used to reflect the image of the document. One of the mirror reflects
the image onto a lens which then focuses on the image through a filter on the charged coupled device. Finally
the filtered document is assembled in the scanner software with pixels making the resolution clear. It is now
ready to save it as a PDF file.

2D Scanners
2D Scanners can be used at an airport to read passports using OCR technology.
What is OCR technology?
Optical Character Recognition is a technology which enables you to convert images captured by a digital
camera, scanned paper documents and PDF file into various types of documents which can be editable and
searchable data.

3D Scanners
Describe step-by step how you would use a 2D scanner to scan in a document and
save it as a .PDF file.
Include an image and use the terms glass panel, bright light, scan head, series of
mirrors, charged couple device (CCD), and pixels in your answer.
Not sure if this is for 2D scanner or 3D scanner, if it is for 2D scanner then I already wrote it on slide 3. If it is 3D
scanner then I’m not sure if the words above are valid for my answer so I’ll just leave it blank. Is that okay?

What happens when a Barcode is read?

The sensor in the barcode scanner detects the reflected light from the illumination
system and generates an analog signal that is sent to the decoder. Once the
barcode is read, the decoder interprets that signal and validates the barcode using
the check digit. It then finally converts it into text.

Input & Output Devices used in a typical supermarket POS system:

Input/Output Device How it is used

Laser scanner to key in the number of same items bought; to key in a weight; to key in the number
under the barcode if it cannot be read by the barcode reader/scanner.
Screen/monitor to present the user the data so they can keep track of the item during their order as
well as the price
Speaker it is used to produce audio output that can be heard by the listener.

Receipt printer to print out a receipt/itemised list

Magnetic stripe reader is a hardware device that reads the information encoded in the magnetic stripe
located on the back of a plastic badge.
Online to select items by touching an icon (such as fresh fruit which
may be sold loose without packaging)

What do the letters RSI mean?:
RSI is short for a repetitive strain injury, it is a gradual buildup of damage to muscles,
tendons, and nerves from repetitive motions.

How can you take precautions from developing RSI?:

To prevent this from happening, you can take breaks and exercise regularly. You can
also stay in a good posture. Prevent reaching keys that are hard to reach by
stretching, these keys can be backspace, enter, shift and control.

Digital cameras - How do they work?:

A digital camera uses a sensor called a charge coupled device. It scans the analogue
signal and displays it on the screen. The quality of the image depends on the number
of pixels that the charge coupled device can use. It then converts digital images and
videos and stores them for viewing, it can be uploaded to a computer and be used
later.
