Act 1 scene 7 is one of the most important scene in the play.

It plays a huge role because it tells

us about the characters and to show how Lady Macbeth is the superior one in the relationship.
This scene also introduce a glimpse on the plot which is tragedy. It displays the activities which
occurred before Duncan’s death discussing whether to murder him or not and this is where we
start to know more about Macbeth.
In the scene Macbeth was like a free man who is capable of differentiating whether his actions
are good or evil. The quote “I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting
ambition” clearly support my point. It shows how Macbeth is trying to rationalize his thoughts
on killing Duncan to explain himself that there is no actual reason to kill him as he is a great king
“meek” and “newborn babe” according to Macbeth. Which revealed that the only thing making
him want to kill Duncan is his ambition. The audience would be surprised by his actions because
in this scene it shows that Macbeth, a brave war hero actually cares about others and
understand himself. Which made him an even more interesting character. However it didn’t last
long.
When Lady Macbeth comes in, she instantly over throne him showing that she is the dominant
one, turning him to a puppet where things turned upside down. The moment when she was
introduced in the play, she’s already plotting a plan to murder Duncan which Macbeth doesn’t
even dare to do. The quote that support my point is “When you durst do it then you were a
man”. This shows how Lady Macbeth is willing to kill Duncan if she were a man since Macbeth is
not. So she is questioning Macbeth’s manhood since she sense the weakness in him. This
revealed that Lady Macbeth is more ruthless and more ambitious than Macbeth. This make her
character really special since she is more superior than Macbeth. The audience would hate her
because of her actions. In this situation where things are going well, Lady Macbeth comes in
and put her ambition first so that she can get what she want.
Lady Macbeth is a manipulative mastermind who is responsible for all the tragedy in the play;
as she persuade, convince and taunt Macbeth to eventually murder Duncan. Lady Macbeth
remind him that this was all his idea in the first place by saying “That made you enterprise to
me”. Another way she uses to persuade him is by saying "What beast wasn't, then”. This
portrays how Lady Macbeth is questioning Macbeth’s manhood. She is taunting Macbeth so
that he would prove her wrong and do what she commands him to do. Lady Macbeth’s sneaky
trick persuaded him which made him seem like a puppet on strings controlled her. This also
reveals that Macbeth is weak because questioning a brave warrior’s manhood would not be a
usual thing to do unless he is afraid and weak and this clearly exposed Macbeth.
The main theme in this scene is ambition and it carries on throughout the play. Macbeth
himself just said “but only vaulting ambition”, which means that it is the only thing motivating
him to do such horrid things. Also the fact that Lady Macbeth coming up with a plan to kill
Duncan reveals her ambition. She does not only persuade Macbeth but also masterminds the
plan. This creates a huge dramatic effect on both the audience and myself. In conclusion the
scene reveals the character traits and show us the relationship between them.
