CONCRETE

Concrete is the mixture of cement , sand , water and coarse

aggregates which can be poured into formwork and form a hard
structure like a stone.
 GREEN CONCRETE

A concrete that made with concrete waste and uses less energy in its
production and produces less carbon dioxide than normal concrete.

This is called eco – friendly and reduced environmental impact for eg.
Energy saving , co2 emissions , waste water.
WHY GREEN CONCRETE?

 The main ingredient in concrete is cement and it consists of limestone (calcium

carbonate CaCO3).

 During manufacture of cement, its ingredients are heated to about 800 –

10000C.

 During the process the Carbon Dioxide is driven off.

 Approximately 1kg of cement releases about 900gms of carbon Dioxide into the
atmosphere.

 Therefore , green concrete came into existence to reduce the emission of

Carbon dioxide.
MATERIALS FOR GREEN CONCRETE

 Recycled Demolition waste aggregate

 Recycled concrete aggregate
 Blast furnace slag (BFS)
 Manufactured sand
 Glass Aggregate
 Fly Ash

APPLICATIONS
 Green concrete is used in the mass construction projects like bridges,
dams, retaining wall etc.

 It is broadly used in building construction.

 It is also used in the road construction.

ADVANTAGES
 It reduces CO2
 Green concrete reduces environmental pollution.
 It has good thermal resistance and acid resistance.
 It is economical compared to ordinary concrete.
 It has better workability than conventional concrete.

DISADVANTAGES
 The green concrete has less split tensile strength than the ordinary
concrete.
 In the eco-friendly concrete, the cost of the reinforcement increases
with the use of stainless steel.
 Water (which is again scarce) absorption is high compared to
conventional concrete.
SUITABILITY OF GREEN CONCRETE
IN STRUCTURES

Several factors include:

• Reduce the dead weight of a structure and reduce the crane age
load.
• Improve damping resistance of building.
• Reduction of the concrete industry’s CO2 emission by 30%.
• No environmental pollution and sustainable development.
• Green concrete requires less maintenance and repairs.
• Increased concrete industry’s use of waste products by 20%.
FOUR WAYS TO PRODUCE GREEN
CONCRETE

 To increase the use of conventional residual products, i.e.,

fly ash.
 To use residual products from the concrete industry, i.e.,
stone dust(from crushing of stones).
 To use residual products from other industries not
traditionally used in concrete, i.e., fly ash from bio fuels
and sewage sludge incineration ash (from sewage treatment)
 To use new types of cement with reduced environmental
impact.
SCOPE IN INDIA

• Green concrete is a revolutionary topic in the

history of India.
• As green concrete is made with industrial wastes it
does take less time to come to India since
industries are having the problem with waste
disposal.
• Also reducing the impact on environment.
LIMITATIONS

• By using stainless steel, cost of reinforcement increases.

• Structures constructed with gren concrete have

comparatively less life than structures with
conventional concrete.

• Split tension of green concrete is less than that of

conventional concrete.
CONCLUSION

 Green concrete is having good thermal and fire

resistant.

 In this concrete increased concrete industry’s use of

waste products by 20%. Hence green concrete consumes
less energy and becomes economical.

 So definitely use of concrete product like green

concrete in future will not only reduce the emission of
CO2 in environment and environmental impact but also
economical to produce.
