LITERATURE REVIEW ON THE STUDY
OF GREEN CONCRETE
Green concrete is nothing but concrete made with eco-friendly wastes .In concrete
industries green concrete is a revolutionary topic. Green concrete is a environmental
friendly material, normal concrete is responsible for release of carbon dioxide to some
extent. To reduce such emissions, various types of concrete were developed by various
researchers by using some waste products from industries and agriculture. It depicts
the convenience of the usage of the various products such as dust, marble, fly ash,
plastic waste, marble granules, silica fumes, blast furnace slag, etc. which requires less
amount of energy and it is also less harmful to environment. Green concrete is capable
for sustainable development by the application of industrial waste to reduce the
consumption of natural resources and energy etc. use of such materials save
approximately 20% of cements. Thus green concrete is an excellent substitute of
cement as it is cheaper, due to which it is made up of waste products, saving energy.
Green concrete has greater strength and durability compared to normal concrete.
LITERATURE REVIEW
• Green concrete is a very low energy consuming material. And it also
reduces environmental pollution. This method is useful for saving natural
resources for future generations.
• The emission of carbon dioxide from conventional cement and conclude
that concrete is most common material used in construction field and it
emits a large amount of environmental wastes. And carbon dioxide
produced from concrete affects the global warming, etc.
• The factor affected on environment due to concrete from which at recent
time approximately one ton of carbon dioxide are emitted from one ton of
cement. Carbon dioxide is one responsible for global warming. Without
aggregates concrete cannot be produced.
WHAT IS A CONCRETE?
• Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, water and coarse aggregates
which can be poured into formwork and form a hard structure like a
stone.
Methodology
Cementing material supplementary
instead of Portland cement.

Local resources of aggregates.

Aggregates and waste

water are used

Aggregate cooling system eliminates dust and reduces the

large amount of water required

Green concrete formed result in high quality concrete

with low water cement ratio and zero carbon emission
TYPES OF CONCRETE
• Reinforced cement concrete (R.C.C.)
• Plain cement concrete
• Ready-mix concrete
• Light weight concrete
• Fiber reinforced concrete
• Green concrete
INTRODUCTION
• Green concrete is revolutionary topic in the history of concrete
industry, this was first invented in Denmark in year 1988.
• Green concrete is the type of concrete which is much like the
conventional concrete but the production of such concrete requires
minimum amount of energy and causes least harm to environment.
• Green concrete has nothing to do with colour.
WHAT IS GREEN CONCRETE?
• A concrete that made with concrete waste and uses less energy in its
production and produces less carbon dioxide than normal concrete.
• This is called eco-friendly and reduced environmental impact for e.g.
energy saving, co2 emissions, waste water.
WHY GREEN CONCRETE?
• The main ingredient in concrete is cement and it consists of limestone
(calcium carbonate caco3)
• During manufacture of cement, its ingredients are heated to about
800-10000c.
• During this process the carbon dioxide is driven off.
• Approximately 1kg of cement releases about 900gms of carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere.
• Therefore, green concrete came into existence to reduce the emission
of carbon dioxide.
MATERIALS FOR GREEN CONCRETE
• Fly ash
• Ground granulated burnt slag (GGBS)
• Fine aggregate
• Coarse aggregate
• Cement
CEMENTITIOUS MATERIALS-FLY ASH
• Fly ash is a by-product produced during the operation of coal-fired
power plants. The finely divided particles from the exhaust gases are
collected in electrostatic precipitators. These particles are called fly
ash.
ADVANTAGES OF USING FLY ASH IN
CONCRETE
• Utilization of fly ash as a part replacement of cement or as a mineral
admixture in concrete saves on cement and hence the emission of
co2.
• Use of good quality fly ash in concrete has shown remarkable
improvement in durability of concrete, especially in aggressive
environment.
TECHNICAL BENEFITS OF FLY ASH IN
GREEN CONCRETE
• High ultimate strength
• Increased durability
• Improved workability
• Reduced bleeding
• Increased resistance to alkali-silica reactivity
• Reduced shrinkage
CEMENTITIOUS MATERIAL-GGBS
• Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is used as a direct
replacement for Portland cement, on a one to one basis by weight.
• Replacement levels for GGBS vary from 30% to up to 85%.
• Typically 40% to 50% is used in most instances. The use of GGBS in
addition to Portland cement in concrete in Europe is covered in the
concrete standard EN 206:2013.
ADVANTAGES OF GGBS IN GREEN
CONCRETE
• Reduction in creep and shrinkage
• It uses the local and recycled materials in concrete
• The heat of hydration of green concrete is significantly lower than the
traditional concrete
• Compressive strength and flexural behavior is fairly equal to that of
conventional concrete
• Since these are optimized mix designs it is easier to handling
TECHNICAL BENEFITS OF GGBS
• Quality sustainable concrete
• Reduction in co2 emissions
• Durability
• Solar reflectant
• Heat of hydration
