PENICILLIN DRUG

Penicillin Antibiotics
- are used to treat many types of infections caused by
susceptible bacteria. They are used to treat infections of the
middle ear, sinuses, stomach, intestines, bladder, and kidney.
They also are used for treating pneumonia, blood infections
(sepsis) uncomplicated gonorrhea, meningitis, endocarditis,
and other serious infections.
MECHANISM OF ACTION

 Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding and inactivating proteins

(penicillin binding proteins) present in the bacterial cell wall.
 Penicillin inhibit the transpeptidation reaction and block cross-linking of
the cell wall. This results in lysis of the cell wall due to high internal
osmotic pressure.
 Penicillins are only effective against growing bacteria, because in non-
growing cells, the process of cross-linking does not occur, and penicillins
will have no effect.
EXAMPLES OF PENICILLIN

 penicillin V
 penicillin G
 amoxicillin
 ampicillin
 nafcillin
 oxacillin
 dicloxacillin
 cloxacillin
 piperacillin/tazobactam
Penicillin V vs. Penicillin G

 Penicillin V
- works by stopping the bacteria from multiplying. This kills off the bacteria that are causing infection.
Penicillin V oral tablet is only available as a generic drug comes as an oral solution.

 Penicillin G Benzathine
- is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It may also be used to prevent certain bacterial
infections (such as rheumatic fever). This medication is a long-acting penicillin antibiotic. It works by
stopping the growth of bacteria. This medication is given by injection into a large muscle
