Most one –syllable adjectives

Add –er:

old – older
cheap – cheaper
short – shorter
One -syllable adjectives ending in
e-,

Add -r:

nice – nicer
safe – safer
One –syllable adjectives ending in
consonant –vowel -consonant

Double the final consonant and add –er:

thin – thinner
hot – hotter
big -bigger
For two-syllable adjectives not ending
in -y and for all three-or-more-
syllable adjectives, use the form
“more + adjective.”
expensive – more expensive

Interesting – more interesting


For two-syllable adjectives ending
in -y, change the -y to -i and add
-er.

funny – funnier
happy - happier
pretty - prettier
We use comparative forms to compare two things.

Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun


(object).
My house is larger than hers.

My house is   larger  than hers.
