 The Agni team was comprised of more than 500 scientists.
 The launch was initially scheduled for 20th April,1989 which was postponed twice due to some
technical issues.
 DRDO-ISRO team got involved and helped them in recovering the technical problem.
 Finally the launch took place on 22nd May,1989.
 Despite various setbacks and issues, it was a successful launch, one that made the whole country
proud.
PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES
 Missile launch vehicles involve wide ranging safety hazards.
 Their thinking about the wellbeing of the villagers staying near the launch pad caught media
attention and led to much controversy.
 There were International pressure to abort the launch.
 The technical glitches during the launch of Agni in the first attempted resulted in power fault
and the launch eventually has to be aborted.
 The negative comments made by the press and were published by different newspaper dailies.
 For the 2nd time, Agni failed.
 On the 3rd time also, the launch was not successful due to harsh weather conditions.

In the fourth attempt Agni took off as all the flight parameters were met.
“ HOW THEY FACED THE CHALLENGES?

 After the failure of their first attempt, APJ Abdul Kalam motivated the workers by
reassuring them that they have lost nothing but a few weeks of rework.
 Followed by their second attempt at launching, he reinstated confidence in the

employees by reminding them about how great opportunities like these ,are
accompanied by challenges and that they should never give up and let the challenge
defeat them.
 The fourth attempt at launching the missile was successful and that’s due to the
tremendous concentration and will power of all those who worked for it.
TAKEAWAYS
 APJ Abdul Kalam, with the launch of Agni, he aimed for skies but with feet planted firmly on
ground.
 A message we got from this case study is that ‘ a leader should know how to manage failure.’
 It has already been quoted,” united we stand, divided we fall.” this case is another example
of this saying.
 We also learned that dedication and hard work definitely pays off.
 In spite of facing unfavourable circumstances, the team did not give up and they made it a
successful mission.

“Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success.”
