Science + Spirituality =?
Science and spirituality need not be thought of as separate for, they are also highly compatible
They are complementary, needing each other to make something whole, something bigger than either of
them alone
Properly integrated, they permit a level of understanding that amounts to much more than their sum
Its not always that data can change one’s mind….

The Butterfly Effect
Edward Norton Lorenz designed a mathematical model of the way
air moves around in the atmosphere
He realized that they did not always change as predicted
The understanding was minute changes in weather model can result
in divergent weather patterns
It shows that a small change can make much bigger changes
happen; that one small incident can have a big impact in the future.
The metaphor goes: “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set
off a tornado in Texas?”
It isn't meant to imply that this could actually happen, just that a small
event, like this, at the right time and place could, in theory, trigger a
set of events that will ultimately culminate in the formation of a
hurricane on the other side of the world

The Aspect Experiment- Background
Propounder - French physicist Alain Aspect and his colleagues in the early 1980s to test Bell's inequality
theorem.
Monistic Idealism( Material Realism, Idealism, Dualism)
Bell's theorem proves that quantum physics is incompatible with local hidden variable theories.
Quantum mechanics deals with the behavior of matter and energy on the scale of atoms and subatomic
particles / waves.
Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon that occurs when pairs or groups of particles are
generated, interact but their independent states cannot be distinguished from one another. Alain was
one of the first to experimentally confirm quantum entanglement.

Aspect Experiment- Explanation
For many years quantum physics had been giving indications that there are levels of reality other than
material level
Initially, objects in quantum physics were thought to be regular waves
Soon it was found that, they are not waves in space and time
They exhibit properties different from those of regular waves
Recognized as waves in potential, waves of possibility, transcendent, beyond matter
Aspect’s experiment showed objects have connections outside of space and time
7
Aspect Experiment- Explanation
Experiment – an atom emits two quanta of light, called photons, going opposite ways, and these
photons affect one another’s behavior at a distance, without exchanging any signals through space
Einstein showed long ago, two objects can never affect each other instantly in space and time because
for any signal to travel from one point to another, must travel with a maximum speed limit which being
speed of light
So, any influence must travel, if it travels through space, takes a finite time – idea of locality
And yet, Aspect’s photons, influence one another, at a distance, without exchanging signals because they
are doing it instantaneously, faster than speed of light
Influence must belong to a domain of reality – transcendent domain of reality

Interconnectedness
Developments in the field of science have been creating tremendous influence in all sphere of life and
business leaders have no exception either.
The approach is to understand an individual, individually.
Force is against the law of nature
The other principle is that we do not recognize that an individual is unique.
God has designed each of us as unique and that is the reason why DNA is unique.

Interconnectedness among Entities

Science in the context of values
Over the years, science and technology have very much developed
Due to this advancement, Humanity is facing new terror and new anxiety
Our mind and our motivation determines the direction in which science and technology are used
(Constructive or Destructive use)
It is very important that the person who wields power must possess certain character and values in life.
Example: Arjuna and Dronacharya

Science in the context of values
In the research paper by William Miller and Debra Miller titled ‘Bringing Human Values to the Forefront of
Corporate Innovation, they have indicated how seemingly progressive technologies have brought along with
them damages and sufferings to human life and planet.
Job enrichment& design - workaholics &work-life imbalance
Fertilizers for high crop yields –toxicity to groundwater and food chain
US and Europe consumer engine- depletion of natural resource
Majority of deaths in developed countries today are from lifestyle related conditions .
According to US Centre for disease control , leading causes of death are heart disease ,cancer and stroke
Actual causes of death are -“the causes of diet , physical activity and tobacco are all leading causes of death”
12
Science in the context of values
Another research paper -“Ethical responsibilities of scientists” says that science itself cannot decide
which course to pursue , as these decisions are made by human beings .
One may argue that science does not take a strong moral position , but it certainly takes a strong
position as to the importance of truth

Science in the context of values
Values in Science:
- Cultural
- Moral
- Psychological
- Disciplinary

Universal Values and values in a
Global context
• Values like truth, peace, love, righteousness and non-violence are present across
• The expression of 5 universal values from the sacred text of 6 religions are:
1. Truth
2. Righteousness
3. Peace
4. Love
15 5. Non-violence
Case study on Motorola Corporation:
• Janiece Webb- former Senior VP Motorola Corp. US led her
professional life rooted in integrity and trust and universal values
of truth and righteousness.
2. She had worked hard to get a huge partnership and contract, for
which they were asked to make a payoff to sign the contract.
Janiece refused admitting her mistake.
