Sexual orientation refers to whether one is attracted to males, females, or both, and includes heterosexuality, homosexuality, and bisexuality. Many LGBT individuals face homophobia, meaning discrimination or fear of homosexuals. Homophobia can involve verbal, mental, or physical abuse as well as preventing access to equal rights and opportunities. It is influenced by some religious beliefs and can negatively impact victims' self-esteem and empowerment through bullying, stereotyping, prejudice, and marginalization. While progress has been made, discrimination against homosexuality still occurs today.
