Standard Method of Measurement

A guideline document on the method of measurement. Example for R.C (BS8110), bridge (BS 5400),etc

Use two standard method :

• BSMMM
Building Standard Method of Measurement of Malaysian
• CESMM
Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement

@nurkamaliahmustaffa2013
Standard Method of Measurement

SMMM CESMM
•used in conjunction with building work or internal work such as •used in conjunction with civil engineering works such as
column, foundation and etc. earthworks, roads, bridges, structures, culverts, sewage etc.

• quantities are prepared by Quantity Surveyors •quantity are prepared by civil engineers

•When tendering contracts must always make provision for any •Temporary and diversion works are classified as separate addition

•Use of m2 of measurement for concrete slab with thickness of

slab specified. •Use m3 as unit of measurement for concrete slab to allow for
flexibility in case alteration is required in structural design ,etc

General Application of CESMM

Section 8 is further divided into 18 classes as follow:

Class A - General Items
Class B - Soil Investigation Works
Class C - Slope Stabilization and Ground Treatment
Class D - Demolition and Site Clearance
Class E - Earthworks
Class F - Concrete Works
Class G - Road Works
Class H - Drainage Works
Class I - Pipe Works
Class J - Piling Works
Class K - Brick Works, Block Works, Masonry
Class L - Timberworks
Class M - Metalworks
Class N - Painting Works
Class O - Rail Tracks
Class P - Environmental Protection and Enhancement
Class Q - Traffic Management and Control
Class R - Miscellaneous Works @nurkamaliahmustaffa2013
CURRENT PRACTISES OF STANDARD METHOD OF MEASUREMENT IN MALAYSIA

•The production of BQ for Civil Engineering works varies from one organization to another
•The current BQ format is not standardized
•Some ambiguities in the BQ description of items
•BQ produced depends on the persons involved in the preparation – if the person is very
meticulous, the document produced would be more detailed and thorough and vice versa

(Source: Sr. Dr. Mohd Mazlan Che Mat, 2010)

BENCHMARK OF CURRENT PRACTICES ON CESMM IN UK

•Succeeded in producing BQ
-more realistic relationship with method of working and the cost carrying out the work
•Easier to compile
•More beneficial to the contractor
•Better reflection to the cost involved
•Serve other purposes more effectively

Unit of measurement
The unit of measurement is depend on the material used, their nature, size
and shape after the completion of item Itself. Generally, it can be used as
follows:

• Length, breadth, height or depth

• Volume
• Area
• Weight

Example :
Description UNIT

a) Supply 300 mm dia mild steel water pipe m

b) Supply and lay concrete G25 m³

c) Supply and lay 300 mm thick crusher run m²

d) Supply and fixed 10mm dia mild steel kg

@nurkamaliahmustaffa2013
For item which is not convenient to measure the length, breadth, thickness,
the unit shall be of in number (NO) because of their shape, nature and size.

Example :

Determine the unit of various of work for the following item below :
Item Description Unit
1. Supply mild steel chair
2. Supply & fix LCD
3. Supply & assembling P.C
4. Supply & fix 25 mm gypsum board ceiling
5. Supply & fix 5 mm thick glass for window
6. Supply & fix 750mm x 1500mm wood main door
7. Supply & fix curtain wall
8. Supply & fix 1m x 5m white board
9. Painting for class room
