The document discusses various global disasters including floods, droughts, fires, tsunamis, and hurricanes. It provides details about each type of disaster such as their causes, effects, and examples that have occurred in Croatia. Specifically, it notes that floods in Croatia in 2014 were caused by heavy rains and an overflowing river that damaged villages. Drought in 2003 caused agricultural losses and damage to crops like corn. Fires in 2007 struck the Croatian coast after a heat wave and destroyed plants and animal life.

Čupeljić, Dorian Škutin, Lea Pogarčić FLOODS • Floods are caused by heavy rains -each time there are more rains than the drainage system can take, there can be floods. • Because of global warming, the ice caps are melting and then the sea levels rise so it can cause floods. • Rivers can overflow their banks and cause flooding. This happens when there is more water upstream than usual, and as it flows downstream to the adjacent low- lying areas (also called a floodplain), there is a burst and water gets into the land) • Dams are breaking-dams are man-made blocks mounted to hold water flowing down from a highland. The power in the water is used to turn propellers to generate electricity. Sometimes, too much water held up in the dam can cause it to break and overflow the area. The excess water can also be intentionally released from the dam to prevent it from breaking and that can also cause floods. FLOODS IN CROATIA • In May 2014 there were big floods in Croatia. • They were caused by heavy rains and the river Sava that overflowed. • It rained for almost two months and a lot of villages were flooded so many people lost their homes. • The whole country helped to donate money, food and clothes. • The most affected villages are Gunja, Rajevo Selo, Račinovci, Posavski Podgajci, Drenovci, Strošinci, Đurići. DROUGHT • Drought is hazard of nature and it could be caused by global warming. • It can cause death of many animals and ruin many plants. • Except animals and plants, people die, too because they don’t have any water to drink. • It can last for days, months and even years. • In last few years droughts have become more often and have caused a lot of damage in many countries. DROUGHT IN CROATIA • In 2003 there was a really dry and hot summer in Croatia. • The land was dry because there was no rain and the temperatures were really high. • Agriculture was really damaged and a lot of money was lost. • Corn was the most damaged plant. FIRES • Fires threathen lives of people and animals and damage forsets. • The flame is the visible portion of the fire. • It can be caused by humans, high temperatures, lightnings and so on. FIRES IN CROATIA • In summer 2007 there were several fires which struck the Croatian coast. • After a heat wave, which covered the entire Southern and Eastern Europe, the drought and southern wind helped spread the fires all over the Croatian coast, destroying a large part of the plants and animal life. TSUNAMI • A tsunami is a huge wave which appeares on the ocean and causes huge disasters. • It is generated by sudden displacements in the sea floor, landslides, or volcanic activity. • In the deep ocean, the tsunami wave may only be a few inches high. • It can be several meters high and can kill animals, people and damage plants. HURRICANE • Hurricane is a large tropical storm with heavy wind. It is a swirling storm measuring 60-1,000 miles in diameter that forms over warm ocean waters. • By definition, it contains winds in excess of 74 miles per hour (119 km per hour) and large areas of rainfall. • It can be caused by global warming. • Each hurricane has an eye of calm winds and low pressure, surrounded by an eyewall of intense thunderstorms with high winds and heavy rain.
