VIEW
Students Will be Able To:
● Identify first, second, and third person point of view
● Determine keywords that signal first, second, and third person point
of view
● Determine the author’s point of view presented in “The Odyssey” by
Homer
WHAT IS POINT OF VIEW?
Author’s Point of view refers to who is telling or narrating the story
within a text
Ex. I went to the store to buy my mom a present for her birthday
SECOND PERSON POINT OF VIEW
Second Person Point of View is represented in a text when the story or piece of
writing is written from the perspective of “you”
Ex. You need to make your bed before you leave in the morning
THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW
Third person point of view is represented in a text when the narrator is a “detached observer” they are not
part of the story, they only tell the stories action and dialogue
Lets the reader know what is seen, heard and felt by the characters
Ex. She heard them talking about the party they were going to on Friday
LETS GIVE IT A TRY...
For each sentence write in your notes the key words, and what point of view it corresponds to
Directions:
1) Read the short excerpt from Book XIII of the Odyssey by Homer
2) Underline or highlight the key words in the text that signify the point of
view
3) Identify what the authors point of view is in the excerpt
