VIEW
Students Will be Able To:
● Identify first, second, and third person point of view

of view
● Determine the author’s point of view presented in “The Odyssey” by
Homer
WHAT IS POINT OF VIEW?
Author’s Point of view refers to who is telling or narrating the story
within a text

A story can be told from three different types of point of view…


First, Second, or Third person
FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW
First Person Point of View is represented when a character within the text
recounts/ retells his or her own experiences or impressions

It lets the reader know only what the character knows

Keywords to Look for:

I, me, my, we, ours, mine

Ex. I went to the store to buy my mom a present for her birthday
SECOND PERSON POINT OF VIEW
Second Person Point of View is represented in a text when the story or piece of
writing is written from the perspective of “you”

It is mainly used to give instructions or directions

Keywords to look for:

You, yours, your

Ex. You need to make your bed before you leave in the morning
THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW
Third person point of view is represented in a text when the narrator is a “detached observer” they are not
part of the story, they only tell the stories action and dialogue

Lets the reader know what is seen, heard and felt by the characters

Keywords to look for:

They, them, he, her, she, it

Ex. She heard them talking about the party they were going to on Friday

For each sentence write in your notes the key words, and what point of view it corresponds to

1) I went outside to walk my dog because it was nice out today


2) They told her that she got a good grade on her exam
3) You can’t make a cake if your oven is broken

6) You need to turn on the engine to start the car
7) We went to the store so we could buy clothes
8) They got really nice presents for Christmas this year
9) You have to do the assignment in order to improve your grade
10) My mom made my favorite food for dinner
POINT OF VIEW IN THE “ODYSSEY” BY HOMER

Directions:

1) Read the short excerpt from Book XIII of the Odyssey by Homer
2) Underline or highlight the key words in the text that signify the point of
view
3) Identify what the authors point of view is in the excerpt
