HOLLSTEINER
• A research scientist at the Institute of
Philippine Culture where she was also the
former director, serving from 1970- 78 and
2000- 2003.
• A professional lecturer at the Dept. of
Sociology and Anthropology of Ateneo de
Manila University.
• Attained her Bachelor’s degree in
Sociology and Anthropology from Cornell
University in Ithaca, New York.
• Later attained a Master’s degree in
Sociology from the University of the
Philippines.
• Specializes in issues regarding women’s role,
people’s participation, NGO’s, civil society and
urban poverty.
• Was a resettlement and gender consultant of
Sustainable Pro- poor Tourism Projects, Inc. for
the Asian Development Bank on behalf of the
governments of Cambodia and Vietnam.
• Handled sociocultural issues as a member of the
Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectric Project,
International Advisory group to the President of
the World Bank.
• Was a regional director of the United Nations
Chldren Fund in Eastern and Southern Africa
from 1983- 1992.
• Also a senior policy specialist of the
Women’s Development and Family/ Child
Welfare, New York Headquarters from
1979- 1983.
• Served as a consultant to diff. World

articles on Sociological, Anthropological,
Political and Development issues.

HARRIET
MARTINEAU
• 1802- 1876
•A British social theorist and whig writer.
•Often cited as the first female
sociologist.
•A strong proponent of both women’s
rights and emancipation of slaves.
• Translated various works from Auguste
Comte.
• Self- taught expert in political economic
theory.
• Said women’s lives must be studied.
• Introduced feminist sociological perspectives
into her own writing on
otherwise overlooked issues such as
marriage, children, domestic and religious
life and race relations.
• Wrote many books and a multitude of
essays from a sociological, holistic,
religious, domestic and perhaps most
controversially feminine perspective.
• Social theoretical perspective was often
focused on the moral stance of a populace
and how it did or did not correspond t
social, economic and political research of
its society.
• Authored one of the earliest analyses of
culture and life in the United States
entitled “Theory and Practice of Society in
America”
• Argued that when studying any society, one
must look at all aspects of it.
• Won numerous awards for her writing and was
a rare successful and popular controversial.
• Published 50 books and over 2,000 articles,
such as;
- Society in America
- Deerbrook
- Retrospect of Western Travel
• Measured progress in society by three
standards;
- the status of those who hold the least
power in society.
