Meaning
Word green is closely related to the Old English
verb growan, which means “to grow”.
Green signifies growth, renewal, health, and
environment.
It can also describe someone who is
inexperienced, jealous, or sick.
In USA green is a slang term for money.
Culturally, green has broad and sometimes
contradictory meanings.
Green as a color
“Green, which is Nature's color, is restful,
soothing, cheerful, and health-giving”.- Paul
Brunton
Created out of a mixture of yellow and blue.
Considered one of the additive primary colors.
Wavelength of roughly 520–570 nanometers.
Complementary color to green is considered to be
red , i.e. when both of them are mixed together
they produce a neutral color (grey white or black ).
Culture of Green
National color of Ireland and is strongly associated
with that country.
Green also has close associations with Islam.
Because of all the green in nature the color is
reminiscent of Spring.
Coupled with red it's a Christmas color.
The United States one dollar note, like all other
American dollar bills, is historically green.
Green in Indian Flag
Flag Description
The National Flag of India is a horizontal rectangular
tricolor of deep saffron, white and India green ; with
the Asoka Chakra.
The green shows our relation to (the) soil, our relation
to the plant life here, on which all other life depends.
Saffron color denotes renunciation or
disinterestedness.
Wheel denotes motion.
White in the centre is light, the path of truth to guide
our conduct.
Language of Green

Color Psychology of Green
Green is a cool color that symbolizes nature
Green has long been a symbol of fertility.
Green is often used in decorating for its calming
effect.
Green is thought to relieve stress and help heal.
Green can improve reading ability.
Green In Science

Chlorophyll is responsible
for the green color in plants
Emeralds come in many
shades of green.
Fireworks typically use
barium salts to create green
sparks.

Green Revolution
Introduction of high-yielding varieties of seeds after
1965 and the increased use of fertilizers and irrigation.
Provided the increase in production needed to make
India self-sufficient in food grains.
Dr “Norman Borlaug” , widely known as the 'Father
of India's Green Revolution‘.
The major benefits of the Green Revolution were
experienced mainly in northern and northwestern
India between 1965 and the early 1980s.
Effects of Green Revolution
In 2009, under a Greenpeace Research Laboratories
investigation, Dr Reyes Tirado, from the University of
Exeter , UK, conducted a study in 50 villages in
Muktsar ,Bathinda and Ludhiana districts that revealed
chemical, radiation and biological toxicity was rampant
in Punjab.
 Sutlej River which flows through Malwa region of
Punjab is severely affected.
Ground water here contains nickel and selenium, while
the tap water has high concentration of lead, nickel and
cadmium.
Greenhouse Effect
Process by which thermal radiation from a planetary
surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse
gases(CO2,watervapors etc) and is re-radiated in all
directions.
Since part of this re-radiation is back towards the surface,
energy is transferred to the surface and the lower
atmosphere.
As a result, the temperature there is higher than it would be
if direct heating by solar radiation were the only warming
mechanism.
Greenhouse effect was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824.
Greenhouse Gases
By their percentage contribution to the greenhouse effect on
Earth the four major gases are:
 Water vapor 30–70%
 Carbon dioxide , 9–26%
 Methane , 4–9%
 Ozone , 3–7%

The major non-gas contributor to the Earth's greenhouse

effect, clouds, also absorb and emit infrared radiation and
thus have an effect on radiative properties of the atmosphere.
Role in climate change
Strengthening of the greenhouse effect through
human activities is known as the enhanced
greenhouse effect.
CO2 is produced by fossil fuel burning and other
activities such as cement production and tropical
deforestation.
This all has resulted in the Global Warming(i.e. avg.
temp. of earth is rising ).
Real Greenhouses
Greenhouse is built of any material that passes
sunlight, usually glass, or plastic.
It mainly heats up because the Sun warms the ground
inside, which then warms the air in the greenhouse.
Helpful in those areas where sun comes out rarely i.e.
in the colder regions .
Helpful in growth of vegetables and fruits in winter
seasons also .

Green Building
Refers to a structure and using process that is
environmentally responsible and resource-efficient
throughout a building's life-cycle.
Building lifecycle include from siting to design,
construction, operation, maintenance, renovation,
and demolition.
New technologies are constantly being developed to
complement current practices in creating greener
structures.
Benefits of Green Building
Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources
Protecting occupant health and improving employee
productivity
Reducing waste, pollution and environmental
degradation.
Green roofs , rain gardens which are parts of green
building are for reduction of rainwater run-off.

Green Technology
Application of the environmental science to
conserve the natural environment and resources.
Also to curb the negative impacts of human
involvement.
Sustainable development is the core of
environmental technologies.
Also names as Environmental technology or
green technology or clean technology.
Different Green Technologies
Recycling .
Water Purification .
Air Purification.
Sewage Treatment.
Solid Waste Management.
Renewable Energy.

Renewable Energy(Windmills)
Energy Conversation Day
Every year Dec. 14 is celebrated as “Energy
Conversation Day” since 2000 in India.
Main motive is to make people aware of fact that how
to make use of sources of energy judiciously.
Green Cars
A green vehicle is a road motor vehicle that produces
less harmful impacts to the environment than
comparable conventional internal combustion engine
vehicles running on gasoline or diesel.
Powering the Green Vehicles
Hybrid electric engines
 Battery
Compressed-air
Hydrogen
Fuel-cell vehicles, Neat ethanol
 Natural gas
Clean diesel
Advantages
An efficient engine that reduces the vehicle's consumption
of petroleum(i.e. petroleum electric hybrid vehicle), or,
preferably, that uses renewable energy sources throughout
its working life.
Emission of many poisonous gases ( CO2(carbon di
oxide) ,CO(carbon monoxide),Nitrogen Oxide,
Particulates)by vehicles will be reduced to great extent.
Due to lowering in the pollution level human beings will
also be benefitted in terms of Health
Green Tea
 Green tea is rapidly gaining popularity in the western
world.
Its natural aroma and widely acclaimed health
benefits make green tea appealing to both the tea lover
and the previously non-tea drinker.
 Many varieties of green tea are available at Special
Teas.
Songs with Green Title

Green Marketing
In recent years the term green or eco
marketing have come to prominence
and reflect a growing concern at all
levels of the impact of the increased
consumption on physical environment.
The implications of the
destruction of the forests , the
appearance of ‘ holes ‘ in the ozone
layer etc were widely published and
created a wave concern about the
destruction of our natural
environment.
Therefore many consumers are in
favor of eco-friendly products .This has
created some impact on marketing .
 Green marketing refers to
the process of selling
products or services based on
their environmental benefits.
Such a product or service
may be environmentally
friendly in itself or produced
or packaged in an
environmentally friendly
way.
Many manufacturers have
recognized environmental
concerns as a source of
competitive advantage and have
developed products with a green
image .

Eco Labeling
Eco label is an environmental claim that appears on
the packaging of a product.
It is awarded to a manufacturer by an appropriate
authority. ISO 14020 is a guide to the award of Eco-
labels.
 In India Eco-mark Scheme in 1991 to increase
consumer awareness in respect of environment.
Aim of the scheme is to encourage the customers to
purchase those products which have less harmful
environmental impact.
Advantages
Improvement of image and sales of products.
Manufacturer’s being more accountable to
environmental impacts.
Consumer’s awareness that their choice of product
do affect the environment as some products are
less damaging to environmental than others
Go Green Concept In India
NMSKCC-( National Mission on Strategic
Knowledge for Climate Change )is working to
encourage green technologies.
 It would identify key academic institutions that
excel in climate change related research.
Many strategies are adopted in the various 5 year
plans to promote the use of green technologies in
Industries also .
