1965 and the increased use of fertilizers and irrigation.

India self-sufficient in food grains.
Dr “Norman Borlaug” , widely known as the 'Father
of India's Green Revolution‘.
The major benefits of the Green Revolution were
experienced mainly in northern and northwestern
India between 1965 and the early 1980s.
Effects of Green Revolution
In 2009, under a Greenpeace Research Laboratories
investigation, Dr Reyes Tirado, from the University of
Exeter , UK, conducted a study in 50 villages in
Muktsar ,Bathinda and Ludhiana districts that revealed
chemical, radiation and biological toxicity was rampant
in Punjab.
Sutlej River which flows through Malwa region of
Punjab is severely affected.
Ground water here contains nickel and selenium, while
the tap water has high concentration of lead, nickel and
cadmium.
Greenhouse Effect
Process by which thermal radiation from a planetary
surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse
gases(CO2,watervapors etc) and is re-radiated in all
directions.
Since part of this re-radiation is back towards the surface,
energy is transferred to the surface and the lower
atmosphere.
As a result, the temperature there is higher than it would be
if direct heating by solar radiation were the only warming
mechanism.
Greenhouse effect was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824.
Greenhouse Gases
By their percentage contribution to the greenhouse effect on
Earth the four major gases are:
Water vapor 30–70%
Carbon dioxide , 9–26%
Methane , 4–9%
Ozone , 3–7%
