A PRESENTATION ON

SUNKOSHI
HYDRPOWER PLANT

Prepared by : Sarbaghya lohala

Introduction

 Sunkoshi Small Hydropower Plant is

located in Dhuskun of Sindhupalchok District
in central Nepal. It downstream where the
Sunkoshi and Bhotekoshi Rivers meet. It is
located 81 km east from kathmandu.
 It is a run of river daily poundage power
station with an installed capacity of
10.05MW and annual design generation of
70 GWh.
 This station has 3 units of 3.35Mw each.

1.Dam
Its can be defined as an obstruction or a
barrier built across a stream or a river in
order to build reservoir or to developed the
head. Based on the function it may be:
 Storage dam
 Diversion dam
 Detention dam
In the Sunkoshi hydropower project has a
diversion dam with a radial gate.
2. Intake
Intake is a structure to obtain the required of
water from the river or the reservoir for
different engineering purpose such as
irrigation, power generation, water supply.
Side intake with a trash rack is provided in
order to prevent from the entry of the floating
derbies into the canal.
3.Headrace canal.
After the intake the water is the water is diverged.
In the context of Sunkoshi the water is diverged
through the canal system.
The canal is provided with a settling basin which
comes in operation during the cleaning of the
settling basin.

The settling basin is used for the settlements of

sediments. The sediments is transported to river
by flushing method.
4. Feeder canal
Due to the presence of the natural stream
across the alignment of headrace canal a
siphon structure is provided in the rainy
season. Where as in summer the stream is
provided to the headrace by coffer dam
5.Peaking pond
It’s located at the upstream of the forebay for
storage of water which is used in dry season.
Its only one hydropower in the context of
Nepal which have peaking pond.

6. Spillway
A spillway is a structure used to provide the
controlled release of flows from a dam or
levee into a downstream area, typically the
riverbed of the dammed river itself.
Spillways ensure that the water does not
overflow and damage or destroy the dam. In
the context of the Sunkoshi ogee spilway is
provided.
7. Forebay
The forebay is located at the beginning of
the penstock. The function of the forebay is
as a head regulator.
8.Penstock
A penstock is a water conduict pipe which is
used to conduct the flow of water to the
turbine. It is designed in such a way that it
can flow water to turbine with least possible
loss of head consistent. There is 3 penstock
is provide .
9.Power house
It’s a mechanical and electrical parts of power
generation where the power is genertaed. It
consist of diiferent power generating
equipments like turbine, generators, shaft, air
tank.etc and transmission.
10. Trailrace
It’s the outlet of the water from the turbine
in a safe way back to the river or stream.
11. Discussion and conclusion
The process of generation of the
hydroelectricity and the structure was
visualized in the Sunkoshi hydropower.
