after Pune. Nagpur lies precisely at the center of the country
with the Zero Mile Marker indicating the geographical center
of India.
• The Nag River, a tributary of the Kanhan River, flows in a
serpentine path and is therefore named “Nag”, the Marathi word
for snake. And hence, the river and city is named as Nagpur.
• While others says that the river flows through the old city of
Nagpur and hence the city is named after this river. “Pur” is a
common suffix given to cities, villages and towns across India,
and is often simply translated “city” The seal of Nagpur

MIHAN:

In order to remove the regional disparity in the state, Govt. of

Maharashtra has decided to develop a composite project called
‘Multi-Model International Passenger and Cargo Hub Airport at
Nagpur’ (MIHAN). The project comprises of developing the
existing domestic airport of Nagpur as an international
passenger and cargo hub airport, along with a huge Special
Economic Zone (SEZ), which is abutting to the boundary of the
airport.

SEZ( Special Economic Zone):

MADC is developing a huge SEZ on an area of more than 2,000

Hectares which is supposed to house various export oriented
units like I.T. industries, gems and jewellery, garments,
electronic goods, pharmaceuticals, processed foods and any
other type of industries. It is proposed to have a huge road
terminal having facilities for parking of about 900 trucks at a
time, huge warehouse, open stockyard, cold storage, etc. and by
the side of this road terminal, there is a proposed rail terminal
capable of handling 2 trains at a time. Thus, MIHAN is a
composite project of airport, road terminal, rail terminal, SEZ
and various other allied services like housing, health city,
international school and many more.
ARCHITECTURE OF
NAGPUR, MAHARASHTRA,
INDIA.
VERNACULAR AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENT
VERNACULAR
ARCHITECTURE:
• The houses varied from small single
storied mud structures to three or even
more, in similar pattern.
• Spaces are arranged about a central
space which is the main bedroom.
• The plan is a rough 7×7 grid.
• The wall thicknesses vary from 1m and
downwards.
• A stepped pyramidal structure with
sloping roofs.
• No open terrace and minimal openings.
VILLAGE GATHERINGS AND PUBLIC SPACES:
• Gatherings of males of the village happened daily in the evenings after the days
work.
• Sometimes small scale social functions also happen here.
• This activity is completely public and thus no privacy is required.
• Front verandah for minor  and personal gatherings
• A large courtyard suitable for holding mini functions
• Seating outside the main gate.
CLIMATE
• The building seems to be built keeping in mind all the
seasons.

• Though it is best suited for summers.

• The upper floors act as false ceiling.

• The side passage rooms act as wind channels.

• Absence of openings reduces the heat exchange to the

minimum.

• The roof extends almost a meter beyond the walls, probably

to protect the heavy rainwater from soaking the walls.

• As well as to provide shade from the sun and prevent heating

up of the building.

• Front courtyard faces the north, preventing direct solar rays

on the most used part.

• The rear verandah can be used much more in winter due to

SPECIFIC FEATURES KEEPING IN MIND THE CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

1. To resist heat gain: 1. Others:

• Increase of thermal resistance and capacity by • Overhanging roof to the north and south to
maximizing the building depth.(The thick walls provide protection from sun and rain and glare
increase the time lag) from the bright overcast sky

• Increase of buffer spaces • Planting and layout provide protection from hot
dry and cold winds
• (Low utility areas like verandahs, courtyards,
storages, etc.) • Walls to provide some shade to external spaces

• Low utility upper floors act as false ceilings.

• Main habitable rooms facing north and south
• Main openings to the north and south
• Light coluoring to minimize heat absorption by
the walls. • Dwellings facing onto fairly generously
proportional courtyards.
• Promote heat loss

• Vegetation outside to decrease glare.

ARCHITECTURE TODAY:
• There are many places in Nagpur where the heritage of the place is preserved.
• Now a days, many huge projects have started developing and many such areas have already
developed with residential townships to luxury bungalows. E.g. Project MIHAAN and
Devaki bungalow rowhouses.
• Public spaces like; Ambazari lake, Kasturchand park, Futala lake started developing along
side tourist places like; Siturbardi fort, Dikshabhoomi, dragon palace, etc.
Nagpur climate
• The city lies on the Deccan plateau of
the Indian subcontinent and has a mean
altitude of 310.5 meters above sea level.

• Climate: Nagpur has a tropical climate

-HOT AND DRY.
•  Precipitation : About 1092 mm | 43.0
inch of falls annually.

• The warmest month of the year is

May, with an average
temperature of 35.3 °C 95.5 °F.
• In December, the average
temperature is 20.1 °C 68.2 °F.
• It is the lowest average temperature
of the whole year.

SOIL CONDITION
• The top Black Cotton Soil needs to be removed
under the structure. Structures can be founded at approx.
1.5 m to 2.0 M Depth. There is good possibility of using an
inexpensive lowerground floor only if architecturally
required.

• Founding strata is basically a Basalt Stone. Although, weathered Basalt Stone is encountered, the
founding strata will not permit high structural settlements. The Allowable Bearing Pressures will
be high. A maximum of 10 to 12 story structures are possible in accordance to the maximum
permissible height.

• The structure falls in a very low Seismic Zone. No additional precautions are required for lateral
loads so large spans are viable.
SURVEY OF NAGPUR
VEGETATION OF NAGPUR CITY
•NAGPUR IS THE SECOND CITY OF MAHARASHTRA STATE; IT IS LOCATED ON THE DECCAN PLATEAU IN CENTRAL
INDIA.
• THE ORIGINAL BIOME IN THIS AREA WAS DRY DECIDUOUS FOREST DOMINATED BY TECTONA GRANDIS (TEAK),
DIOSPYROS MELANOXYLON (TENDU LEAVES) AND VARIOUS SPECIES OF TERMINALIA TREES.
• NAGPUR HAS A TROPICAL DRY EQUABLE CLIMATE MARKED BY THREE DISTINCT SEASONS: A VERY HOT AND
DRY SUMMER (MARCH TO MAY), A WET SEASON DURING WHICH MOST OF THE PRECIPITATION OCCURS WITH
THE SOUTH-WESTERN MONSOON (JUNE-SEPTEMBER), AND A MILD WINTER (NOVEMBER TO FEBRUARY;
OCTOBER BEING THE POST-MONSOON TRANSITORY PERIOD)
•THE TOTAL MEAN ANNUAL PRECIPITATION IS ~1,100MM, THE ANNUAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE 27º C, AND THE
ANNUAL AVERAGE HUMIDITY 51%
•HILL AND LAKE COUNTRY WITH MIXED VEGETATION COMPRISING ORNAMENTAL, FRUIT PLANTS , SCRUB,
GRASSLAND; SOME PART WITH NATURAL FOREST DOMINATED WITH LANTANNA SPECIES.
•ON AGRICULTURAL LAND , VEGETATION IS MIXED; CULTIVATED FODDER PLANTS [BARSEAM AND JAWAR].

• Nagpur city has developed drastically throughout the year. This development
has created a need for more educational and residential potential, which gives
us an opportunity as architects to be able to design this CHALLENGING
project. The site is a blooming township, a sound and a safe environment for
an educational institution with residential facility.
