The Story of My

Literacy Narrative!
Haley Cano
Where it all started!
• As a child, I wrote on everything I could get my
hands on and read everything with text, even
shampoo bottles!
• I don't know where it came from, but I think my
grandma had a lot to do with my fascination with
reading and writing
• She journaled a lot when I was a kid, so I followed
in her footsteps and that's where my journey began
Kindergarten
• I didn't really pay attention to reading and
writing in this stage of my life
• I was a rebel child, so I was having more fun
getting into trouble
• I had a hard childhood and at the end of this
stage, I started to realize I should channel all
that anger into my passion for writing and
reading
1st grade
• I started journaling at a young age in this part of my life to get through
the days
• Mrs. Sanchez was my teacher and a great support system, but she
wasn't the one who pushed me to read and write
• I started reading goosebumps books because they were long
..4th grade
• After 1st grade, I lost the passion for writing/reading due to personal
reasons, but it all changed again in 4th grade
• Mrs. Vela was my teacher and she absolutely loved my writing and it
encouraged me to keep writing
• I fell in love with big chapter books because I could put the text into
pictures in my head
..9th grade
• I still journaled throughout the time of fourth grade til this time and
my love for reading began to fade
• I would read but only when it was needed, not because I wanted to
• I started to struggle at this time with finding my true self
..senior year
• Up til senior year, I had it rough, so journaling was my way of
expressing how I felt during those times
• I started reading poem books by Rupi Kaur and it really got me into
poetry
• Til this day I still read and write for my own self
Present Day
• I journal when I can, but when I do, I can write for hours
• It's become a part of who I am as a person and it's helped me talk to
others about how great it is and how important it can be to us
• My favorite authors now are John Green, Rupi Kaur, and Stephen
King
