WHAT IS VITAMIN D?

• Fat soluble vitamin that exist in two forms


• Vitamin D2 – plant based
• Vitamin D3 – animal based

• Steroidal hormone
• Produced by the body when skin is exposed to the sun
WHERE DOES IT
COME FROM?
• D2 comes from plant-based sources
• Mushrooms
• Fortified foods – orange juice, flours, and
cereals

• D3 comes from animal-based sources


• Fatty fish – salmon, sardines, mackerel, and
herring
• Dairy – milk, cheese, and yogurt

• Sun Exposure
WHAT DOES
VITAMIN D DO?
• Promotes strong bones
• Reduces inflammation
• Controls glucose metabolism
• Modifies cell growth and
immune function
• Promotes neuromuscular
functions
WHO NEEDS IT?
• Breastfed infants
• Older adults
• People with limited sun exposure
• People with darker skin
• People that lack fat in their diet
• People that are obese
• People that have had gastric bypass surgery
