PRESENTATION
ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

HISTORY
▸ The Orange County Sheriff’s office was established on
January 31st, 1845. The very first Orange County
Sheriff was a gentleman by the name of William Henry
Williams. While Williams was in fact appointed to
office in 1845, a man named John Ivey had the
distinction of being the first elected Sheriff.

▸ John Ivey lived in a very rural area that is now known as

downtown Orlando. Fast forward to 2020, we now have
Sheriff Jerry L. Demings as the leader of the Orange
County Sheriffs department.

HISTORY
▸ Sheriff Jerry L. Demings has made history twice. Not
only was he elected Orange County’s first African
American Sheriff in November of 2008 but he was
previously the first African American Chief of the
Orlando Police Department in 1998.

▸ Sheriff Demings is committed to reducing the crime

rate in Orange County and encourages cooperation
between the agency, other government entities, and
the community to help reach this goal.
ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

▸ The Orange County Sheriffs Department serves as our cities first level of protection. They
work to provide the overall safety for the entire city of Orlando. The OCSO prides themselves
on their ability to keep their community safe by reporting and solving crimes, reducing the
percentage of crime, and inspiring the community.
▸ The department is responsible for dealing with different types of criminal investigations. Few
of those can include auto theft, homicide, domestic violence, sex crimes, robbery, and child
abuse among many others.
▸ They also have a special operations department which investigates gang units among many
others. The OCSO continues to run like a well oiled machine, they continue to overview all
crime reports and investigate the Orange County area.

than $300 million and over 2,700 sworn and civilian
employees. In order to become a police officer with
the OCSO organization there are a few things you
must complete and provide proof of.

▸ You also will need to be in excellent shape as you will
have to go through the policy academy which is an
extremely rigorous process. If you can pass all of the
minimum requirements and pass the police academy
then you can enter the police force with OCSO.

▸ The population demographic among all of the officers in

the OCSO organization is very diverse and inclusive
which they pride themselves on. Once you enter the
police force there is room to grow and move up through
the ranks within the organization.

▸ Something that is incredibly unique to the Orange
County Sheriffs Department is that they also participate
in youth services across the county.

▸ The Orange County Sheriff's Office recognizes the

importance of providing quality outreach services to
young children as they are the future of the community.
Their Youth Services Section is committed to the
agency's School Resource Officers, the MAGIC
program, and several other agency programs targeting
the county's juvenile population.

OUTREACH
▸ Their amazing partnership continues between the
Orange County Sheriffs Office Youth Services
Section and the Orange County School Board.
Together they strive to provide a safe and secure
learning environment.

▸ The Sheriff’s Office and the school system share the

expenses to place deputies in the public school
system. The uniqueness of a school setting enables
the deputy to serve as a positive role model while

environment.
