PRELIMINARY SUPPORT STUDY OF ISOMETRIC

CONSIST OF:
 CHECK FOR FLEXIBILITY & SUPPORT FEASIBILITY IN PIPE
ROUTING IF NOT, SUGGEST RE-ROUTING.
 CLASIFICATION OF SMALL BORE & BIG BORE LINES
 PROCESS & UTILITY LINES CLASIFICATION
 ANTICIPATING LOADS / STRESS BUILD-UP IN PIPE
 NOZZLE LOADS

Flexibility Analysis
Critical Lines(Stress Analysis) and Non Critical Lines form the part of
the Flexibility Analysis
Based on the Stress Criteria, the lines are normally divided into 3
Levels
 Level – 1 - Non Critical lines, only sagging and Loads due to
self weight and weight of fluid is considered.
 Level – 2 - These are critical lines, manual calculations are
sufficient to decide the support locations.
 Level – 3 - These are highly critical lines, calculations are
performed using Caesar.

Material Specification
There are Metallic and Non Metallic Pipes, select SUPPORTS
accordingly.
Commonly used metallic pipes are
 Carbon Steel
 Stainless Steel
 Alloy Steel
 Galvanized Steel
Commonly used Non metallic pipes are
 FRP & PVC

Insulation
Based Insulation shoes are selected. Different type of shoes are
available to suit conditions. The different types of Insulation are as
follows:
 Hot Insulation
 Cold Insulation
 Personal Protection Insulation

PIP DEPARTMENT GET-2007
Supports

Principle of placing Support

 Study near by Primary structure for pipe support
 Study of secondary steel required to place support
 Consider Client Pipe support span
 Consider Client Support standard
 Consider Special support requirement

7
PIP DEPARTMENT GET-2007
Supports

Principle of placing Support

 Consider variable shoe heights for slope line
 Consider min of 50mm weld gap between any two weld
 Consider Fix point at control valve station
 Consider adjustable support at pump suction line
 Consider maintenance space around pump

8
PIP DEPARTMENT GET-2007
Supports

Principle of placing Supports

 Consider R. Pad for higher load on Dummy /Trunnion

 Consider R. Pad for higher load / corrosion on pipe
 Consider Safety valve support (Open/Closed circuit)
 Consider Support near expansion bellows
 Consider Thermal expansion In column / piping

9
PIP DEPARTMENT GET-2007
Supports

Principle of placing Supports

 Consider Thermal expansion on horizontal vessel

 Consider expansion on Pipe rack
 Consider Group / Common support
 All battery limit lines on Pipe rack shall be anchor
 Consider Spring at heavy load & Displacement

10
PIP DEPARTMENT GET-2007
Supports

Principle of placing Supports

 Consider temporary support during maintenance

 Avoid support structure on access way
 Avoid support structure on matl. Handling space
 If support loads are more than 1-Ton verify with civil
 If Support frame exceed 1.5m height verify with civil

11
PIP DEPARTMENT GET-2007
Supports

Principle of placing Supports

 Provide Insert plate & foundation detail to civil

 Provide loads on Structure & Floors to civil
 Co ordinate with Civil for support modeling interface
 Co ordinate with Equipment dept. for vessel interface

Marking on Isometrics
Marking a support on an Isometric refers to the assigning of a position
number for the support and denoting a distance from any reference point.
All supports should have a position number for the easy traceability of the
support.
eg., R1_01C-4506
Where R1 – Denotes the Type of support
01C – Denotes the Area Code and
4506 – Denotes the position number.
There are different types of support numbering and Coding which vary
from project to project.

Support MTO
The Support MTO (Material Take Off) is the List of Support Materials
to be procured for that project.
Generally the support MTO is issued in 3 Phases,
 Special support MTO
 I st MTO
 Intermediate MTO
 Final MTO.
