Introduction to the organization

The Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) is a ISO

9001 research and development organization under the Ministry of
Railways of India, which functions as a technical adviser and
consultant to the Railway Board, the Zonal Railways, the Railway
Production Units, RITES and IRCON International in respect of design
and standardization of railway equipment and problems related to
railway construction, operation and maintenance. A Director General
who ranks with a General Manager of a Zonal Railway heads the
RDSO. The Director General is assisted by an Additional Director
General and 23 Sr. Executive Directors and Executive Directors, who
are in charge of the 27 directorates:
Workings Of the organization
RDSO is the sole R&D organization of Indian Railways and functions as the technical advisor
to Railway Board Zonal Railways and Production Units and performs the following important
functions:
➢ Development of new and improved designs.
➢ Development, adoption, absorption of new technology for use on Indian Railways.
➢ Development of standards for materials and products specially needed by Indian Railways.
➢ Technical investigation, statutory clearances, testing and providing consultancy services.
➢ Inspection of critical and safety items of rolling stock, locomotives, signaling &
telecommunication equipment and track components.
➢ RDSO multifarious activities have also attracted attention of railway and non-railway

organizations in India and abroad.

Training Introduction
CASNUB Bogie
CASNUB- CAST STEEL + SNUBBER SPRING
 Indian Railway started its use in 1973 as testing wagon,
 After that in 1981 Its use started in Freight stock .
 First used in BOXN wagon .
 Its weight Varies from 5.125 ton to 5.7 ton.
 The most recent version of it,  CASNUB –22HS bogie has been
developed for high- speed operation with maximum permitted speed up
to 110 Kmph.
 It can carry load upto 20.3 t, However all bogies except CASNUB
22HS can be upgraded up to 22.9 t.
Different Components of casnub bogie

 Elastomeric Pad (EM Pad)

Elastomeric pads are provided in all versions of CASNUB
bogie except CASNUB 22W. The main purpose of providing
elastomeric pad is to reduce wheel wear.

 Side Frame
In order to hold the wheel set in position during the derailment,
side frame key is provided. It is fitted from bottom of jaw as
shown in figure below.

 Bloaster
Load transmission takes place from the wagon to side frames
through bolster
 Spring plank
Spring plank is a member made of solid steel (flanging quality). It
joins two side frames of CASNUB bogie.

 Load Bearing Springs and Snubber Springs

The bogies are fitted with two groups of long travel helical spring
nests.
These springs are provided to transfer the load from the bolster to
side frame.
Bogie during movement on the track may have to pass through
track irregularities causing more impact load.

Moreover rocker action of bogie due to twist in the track can be

avoided by snubber spring providing springs.

Bogie Brake Gear Assembly

On application of brakes, the brake pressure on the two wheels of an axle

should be more or less equal; otherwise, the wheel which is braked less
would tend to travel more, causing the axle to become angular.

.The brake gear mainly consists of Brake Beam (with brake head and brake
block assembly), Push rod, piston ,End pull rod, Brake Beam hangers (in
CASNUB 22W(M) bogies).

It works on Air-break system , called the straight air system, compressed air
pushes on a piston in a cylinder. The piston is connected through
mechanical linkage to brake shoes that can rub on the train wheels, using
the resulting friction to slow the train.
The bogie comprises of two cast steel frames and a floating
bolster. The bolster is supported on the side frame through
two nests of springs.

The various bogie versions developed are as under:
 CASNUB -22W
 CASNUB -22W (Retrofitted)
 CASNUB -22W(M)
 CASNUB -22NL
• CASNUB NLM
 CASNUB -22NLB
• CASNUB -22HS
CASNUB –22W
 “ wide jaw” category.
 No elastomeric pad (EM Pad) where the later versions are provided
with EM pad.

The disadvantages of this bogie are:

 Higher wheel wear

 Replacement of brake beam requires removal of wheelset.
 Low stability as significant vertical load not shared by side
bearer.
CASNUB 22W contd..
The brake beam used in this version is known as “pocket type” or
“sliding type”. The brake head is integral part of the brake beam and
slides in the pocket provided in the side frame.

Two types of 22 W -
Integral type centre pivot
Non integral type centre
pivot
CASNUB –22HS
 The CASNUB –22HS bogie has been developed for
high- speed operation with maximum permitted
speed up to 100 Kmph. The side frame, elastomeric
pad, centre pivot, centre pivot lock, adapter are
similar to NLB version.
 The bolster is mostly same as NLB type except for
outer gib opening and higher diameter spigot for the
spring seat. The outer gib opening has been
increased to 241 mm from 234 mm as in case of
NLB type.
 The side bearer used with this version is spring
loaded constant contact type.
