Brief presentation of organisation :
The P.A. D.K.X encompasses the Central office and three prefectural
departments (of Drama, Kavala and Xanthi).
The P.A D-K-X/Central Office is an independent Body and is composed of 3

different Directorates, the Financial and Business Plan Directory, the Human
Resources Directory and the Programming and Development Directory and
the Technical Services Directory.
Its aims are the economic, social and cultural development of the Regions of
Drama, Kavala and Xanthi as well as the coordination of the three mentioned
Prefectural Departments in social, cultural, environment, trade and rural
development issues .
The P.A. D-K-X was a lead partner in a Life Nature project relative entitled “Habitat
Management and Raptor Conservation in Nestos Delta and Gorge (LIFE
2002NAT/8489/GR)”.
It was also beneficiary of the following INTERREG IIIA(Greece – Bulgaria)

programs relative to environmental issues entitled:
- “Transfer of know-how for the promotion of a common management promotion of a
common management planning on the Rhodope mountain, according to the habitats
directive (92/43/EEC)”
- “Common approaches to a joint planning for the promotion of the ecologically
sensitive sites on the Rhodope mountain”.
- “Management actions, protection and promotion of the Nestos River fish - fauna”
It also participated in a transnational project entitled “Carpathnian Project” funded by
INTERREG III B Cadses program.
Furthermore, it participate in numerous other projects related to culture, environment

and youth.
The P.A. D-K-X:
- participates to the Union of Border and Cross Border Regions of East

Macedonia and Thrace,
- is involved in Euregios/Cross border organization
- is the institutional leader of the Mesta/Nestos UNESCO HELP initiative
- participates to the Network of the European GMO Free Regions.
Role in biodiversity conservation and protection :
We have completed a project entitled “Management actions, protection and

promotion of the Nestos River fish - fauna” funded by the INTERREG IIIA / PHARE CBC
Greece- Bulgaria Programme.
This project consisted of actions that contributed to modern management of fish

stocks of the Nestos River included:
(I) a detailed record of the qualitative and quantitative composition of fish fauna in
the river ecosystem,
(II) examination and development of protective measures of stock fish fauna in the
ecosystem.
(III) improvement of the natural environment of fish populations,
(IV) development of the following actions: (a) improvement of local riparian
vegetation in parts where it has been reduced, and (b) creation of small artificial
basin naturalization of cultivated juveniles in positions selected by a study
(V) Promotion and protection of the river ecosystem, habitats and fish fauna through
information, awareness, knowledge exchange and environmental education
Furthermore, we have completed a project entitled “Habitat Management and

Raptor Conservation in Nestos Delta and Gorge (LIFE 2002NAT/8489/GR)” funded
by the DG. Life.
This project intended to solve some of the most severe threats for priority habitats
and wildlife species in two adjacent Natura 2000 sites along the Nestos Stream
(GR1150010 & GR1120004.
Actions were taken for the management and restoration of habitats and the
protection of endangered species.
Infrastructures for the eco-tourism development in both sites were foreseen.
Some of the actions like the reconnections of old river branches are very innovative
for Greece and will have high demonstrative character
In particular different measures took place in three Project Actions Sites:
(a) Nestos Mouth area:
-Reforestation of 60 ha natural riparian forests on former agricultural land on both
river banks,
-Reconnection of four old river branches with main stream for the recovery of
freshwater marshes, riparian forests and against salt water intrusions into ground and
surface waters,
-Installation of three joint rafts of 4X5 m each for breeding terns and water birds,
-Planning of an extended nature trail with three observation hides,
-Installation of one automatic environmental monitoring station for water quality.
(b) Coastal Lagoons:
-Five joint floating breeding rafts for terns and other water birds,
-Installation of one automatic environmental monitoring station for water quality,
-Planning of a nature trail for bird watching with two observation hides.
(c) Nestos Gorge:
-One large fenced feeding site for birds of prey, especially vultures,
-A large visitor hide near the feeding site,
-Planning of a nature trail for bird watching.
Description of dissemination actions to general public and
regional policy makers :
One day meetings and conferences in order to inform local

stakeholders, policy makers and people regarding the results and
outputs of the projects we completed.
