What Is CSR ?
Corporate initiative to assess and take responsibility for the
company's effects on the environment and impact on social
welfare. The term generally applies to company efforts that go
beyond what may be required by regulators or environmental
protection groups.
CSR IS NOT …….
• Tokenism – giving as a public relations stunt
• Philanthropy – charitable organizations
• Cause-related marketing – fund raisers
• Compliance – doing what is expected
Status of CSR in Nepal
• CSR is mostly associated with Philanthropy and Charity
• CSR has been photo opportunity and publicity tool
• Majority of the CSR activities in Nepal are socially driven projects that help to
empower marginalized communities.
• Nepal Business Initiative (NBI) was formed in July 2003 with a view to
enhance the business contribution to Nepal’s future (www.nbinepal.org.np/).
• Organizes seminars on CSR time to time to create awareness among
corporate houses about CSR activities.
• whatever activities are done by the business houses in the name of CSR is
rather philanthropic in nature (South Asia Forum on Responsible Business’s
(SAFoRB)
• In Nepalese scenario, establishing an industry is regarded as CSR because it
provides employment opportunity for people. At this situation where millions of
people are leaving the country for work, it is of course necessary to create and

Conclusion
• Economic domain of CSR is emerging in Nepalese companies shifting
from philanthropic toward focusing on their strategic intents.
• Although, efforts from the side of government are there to achieve
MD goals, companies in Nepal are knowingly or unknowingly
contributing to achieve some of these goals.
• No clear cut regulatory framework regarding also acts as a hindrance
in implementing CSR. It is found that the degree of CSR activities of
companies should depend upon their business size and profile. In
other words, the bigger the company, the bigger is its CSR program.
