Determine the magnitude of the projected
component of force FAC acting along the z-axis.
z

y
x
Steps:
•First calculate the unit vector AC

•Then multiply the magnitude of force with it to find the

force along AC

•To find the component of AC along Z axis,dot product the

force vector with the unit vector along Z-axis

• If the answer is minus, it can be concluded that its’s

direction is along negative Z axis
AC = OC - OA
= 12sin30°i+12cos30°-36k

UAC = 12sin30°i+12cos30°-36k

(12sin30°)²+(12cos30°)²+(36)²

UAC = 0.158i+0.2739j-0.948k

This is the unit vector along AC

By observing the diagram,
The magnitude of force along AC=600lb

Force along AC = 600{0.158i+0.2739j-0.948k}

= {94.87i+164.32j-569.21k}N

Component along Z-axis= FAC .k

={94.87i+164.32j-569.21k} . {k}
= - 569.21 lb
≈ -569 lb

The component of force is 569lb

along the negative Z-axis
