INTRODUCTION:
• Cold-formed steel (CFS) is the common term for steel products shaped by cold-working processes carried
out near room temperature, such as rolling, pressing, stamping, bending etc.
• Cold-formed steel (CFS) frame is referred as lightweight steel frame building which is constructed using
galvanized CFS sections. This type of construction is now called as industrialized building system (IBS)
which becomes a famous construction choice in low to medium rise building and residential house
construction.
• It provides Various advantages as compared to traditional construction methods. For instance,
Simple and rapid construction
High quality controlled
Ease of prefabrication
Mass production
Eliminates the need of formwork
Cost and time saving
Advance sustainable development by minimizing the waste of construction and recycling elements
HOT ROLLED VS. COLD FORMED STEEL FRAMES:
• As the working takes place in temperatures below the rescrystallisation temperature, strain
hardening occurs. The rolls induce plastic deformation. Thus, the yield strength of cold rolled
steel is higher than that of hot rolled steel.
• As an example, a hot rolled steel product may have a yield strength of 235 MPa. In comparison,
a cold rolled steel product with the same chemical composition has a yield strength of 365 MPa.
• Among the connections according to the locations, the stiffness of the column
base connection had significant effects on the load carrying capacity of the
portal frame. The failure of the connections of portal frames was caused by the
rupture of clinching that followed the local buckling in the cold-formed steel
section and the excessive rotation of connections.
