INTRODUCTION:
• Cold-formed steel (CFS) is the common term for steel products shaped by cold-working processes carried
out near room temperature, such as rolling, pressing, stamping, bending etc.
• Cold-formed steel (CFS) frame is referred as lightweight steel frame building which is constructed using
galvanized CFS sections. This type of construction is now called as industrialized building system (IBS)
which becomes a famous construction choice in low to medium rise building and residential house
construction.
• It provides Various advantages as compared to traditional construction methods. For instance,
 Simple and rapid construction
 High quality controlled
 Ease of prefabrication
 Mass production
 Eliminates the need of formwork
 Cost and time saving
 Advance sustainable development by minimizing the waste of construction and recycling elements
HOT ROLLED VS. COLD FORMED STEEL FRAMES:

• As the working takes place in temperatures below the rescrystallisation temperature, strain
hardening occurs. The rolls induce plastic deformation. Thus, the yield strength of cold rolled
steel is higher than that of hot rolled steel.

• As an example, a hot rolled steel product may have a yield strength of 235 MPa. In comparison,
a cold rolled steel product with the same chemical composition has a yield strength of 365 MPa.

• The main advantages of cold working are:

 Accurate finished dimensions
 Clean surface
 Greater strength properties
LITERATURE REVIEW:

• An extensive experimental study was conducted to investigate the structural

performance of connections for cold-formed steel portal frames. The structural
performance of the specific cold-formed section was proven adequate for the
flexural member constituting the portal frame.

• The connection tested exhibited nonlinear moment-rotation relationships and

the stiffness of the connection could be categorized in the semirigid connection.

• Among the connections according to the locations, the stiffness of the column
base connection had significant effects on the load carrying capacity of the
portal frame. The failure of the connections of portal frames was caused by the
rupture of clinching that followed the local buckling in the cold-formed steel
section and the excessive rotation of connections.
RESEARCH GAP:

• Limited research has been undertaken to quantify the cyclic or seismic

performance of cold-formed steel moment resisting connections in
earthquake engineering
• Recently, Sabbagh (2011) and Sabbagh et al. (2011;2012(a); 2012(b);
2013) have conducted a combination of experimental and non-linear
elastic plastic finite element analysis on novel back-to-back curved-
flange cold-formed steel moment resisting connections.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE:

• To study the connection behavior of cold forms steel frames.

• Study the connection behavior of column base connection.
• Study the behavior of Eave (Rafter to column) connection.
• Study the behavior of Apex (Rafter to Rafter) connections.
METHODOLOGY:

• The steel frame is taken from the available

literature (Y.B. Kwon, H.S. Chung and G.D. Kim)
and perform 3D FEM in ABAQUS using different
scenarios.

• The structural behaviour of rafters has been studied

for the application to the portal frame system

• To check the behavior of column base connection

and to study the moment-rotation behavior of
column base connection.
