HOUSEKEEPING
 Housekeeping is the management of
household affairs.

Means we are dealing with maintaining


a clean and comfortable environment in t
he premises.

In other word, it is the housekeeping task t


o ensure the guest needs and preferences
to comfort and security are fulfilled.
HOUSEKEEPING DEPARTMENT
 House-keeping is one of the largest departments
of the hotel which is responsible for creating
cleanliness, maintenance and safe environment.
 By providing the maximum comforts to t
guest, it maintains the standard of the hotel
he
which contributes the hotel in achieving
maximum profit by selling the rooms.
It is also regarded as the Eye and Ear of
the management from where the main reve
nue income is generated.

FUNCTIONS OF HOUSEKEEPING
DEPARTMENT

A Hotel Housekeeping Department Has Four Main


Functions;
Cleaning and Maintenance.
Training of its personnel.
Requisition and Control of necessary supplies and
equipment.
Paper work- schedules and report

Housekeeping department cleans the rooms and
toilets and wash basins in the room. Apart from cl
eaning the guest rooms, housekeeping department i

A guest requires a comfortable bed to take rest, relax
and enjoy.
 Linen Management
One of the important jobs of the Housekeeping
Department is clothes and linen management. Th
is involves all functions from purchase of linen
to laundering, storage, supplies and to condemnatio
n of this department.

Laundry Service
It is the job of the Housekeeping Department to
ensure clean and hygienic washing of all the line
n items, and then distributing them to different a
reas of the hotel.
 Key Control
Key control is one of the major jobs of the housekee
ping department. The room keys have to be handl
ed efficiently and safely before and after letting th
e room.

 Safety and Security


The Housekeeping Department is responsible for main
taining a peaceful atmosphere in the hotel. If the gue
sts and staff always fear for their safety and the safet
y of their belongings, the atmosphere will be very ten
se.
 Interior Decoration
Interior decoration is the art of creating a pleasa
nt atmosphere in the living room with the addition of
a complex of furnishings, art, and crafts, appropriate
ly combined to achieve a planned result or desig
n. These arts and crafts have to be well maintained b
y the housekeeping department
Room Maintenance
Good housekeeping department is just as responsible
for the hotel's maintenance as an engineering
department. In an ideal environment, the
housekeeping staff and managers should act as t
he eyes and ears of the engineering departmen
t. If damaged or broken items are not reported,
they can't be fixed.

largest department in a hotel.
o It will comprises 75 percent or more of the total per

manent staff.
o Housekeeping department also has more unskilled

workers on its staff than has any other department.


o At one time or another, all come into a direct

REQUISITION AND CONTROL
The third major function of housekeeping is requisitioning,
storage and control of many operating supplies required for t
he daily routine of the department. The items in the guest rooms mus
t be replenished each day to maintain the par, or standard,

rt on room inspections and reports. As a conc
lusion, every staff has to understand the imp
ortance of maintaining these high standards
each and every day.
