▪ The hippies rediscovered hallucinogenic
mushrooms in the 1960’s renaming them ‘magic
mushrooms’ or “shrooms” or ‘mushies’ for
short.

What Is a Hallucinogenic
mushrooms?
The hallucinogens are a chemically diverse
class of drugs, which are characterised by
their ability to produce distortions in
sensations and to markedly alter mood

variety of natural and synthetic sources,
and are structurally dissimilar (Jacob and
Fehr, 1987)

▪ Archaeological evidence suggests that psilocybin-containing mushrooms
have been used by humans since prehistoric times in Colombia, Mexico,
Guatemala, Spain and others countries.

▪ In 1955, Valentina and R. Gordon Wasson became the first known

Caucasians to actively participate in an indigenous mushroom ceremony.
In 1956 Roger Heim identified the psychoactive mushroom that the
Wassons had brought back from Mexico as Psilocybe and in 1958, Albert
Hofmann first identified psilocybin and psilocin as the active compounds
in these mushrooms.

▪ Magic mushrooms became inextricably tied to the hippie movement and

its search for a new form of spirituality for the rest of the decade. The
1970s brought a ban on psilocybin except for medical research, which
began again after more than 30 years.

Benefits and
dangers of
hallucinogenic
mushrooms
Is it safe to take magic
mushrooms?
Magic mushrooms are the safest “recreational” drug to take
and those who take them are the most sensible and well
prepared. Out of almost 10,000 people who took them, only
0.2% needed emergency medical treatment. But magic
mushrooms, or psilocybin mushrooms, contain a compound
that has been a class A drug under the UK Misuse of Drugs
Act since 1971 – like heroin and crack cocaine.

In general, the effects of psilocybin are
similar to those of LSD. They include
altered perception of time and space and
intense changes in mood and feelings.

The effects of psilocybin vary from person

to person. They are strongly influenced by
the differences in the mental state and
personality of the user as well as the
"setting" of the immediate environment. If
the recreational user is mentally unstable or
feeling anxious about using the
hallucinogen, there is a greater chance of a
bad experience.
