INTRODUCTION
 Assam is a state in north-eastern India, south of the eastern
Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak river valleys.

 Assam covers an area of 30,285 sq m and is known as Land of Red


River and Blue Hills.

 The state is bordered by


• Bhutan and the state of Arunachal Pradesh to the north;
• Nagaland and Manipur to the east;
• Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south;
• West Bengal to the west.

Arts & crafts
• Assam is mostly known for its exquisite silks, the bamboo and cane crafts,
metal crafts, wood crafts, masks, jewellery, terracotta, traditional paintings.

• Japi, Horai, Bota are some prestigious Assamese crafts.

Assamese Cuisine
• Assam's staple diet is rice with interestingly cooked fish and meat dishes.

• Many varieties of rice are produced and variously prepared here like cheera,
muri, akhoi, sandoh guri, bora saul etc.

• For people with a sweet tooth, there is a range of sweetmeats called pitha,
laaru etc.

Assamese handlooms and attire
• The state is home to several types of prominent and prestigious silks muga,
paat & eri. Of a naturally rich golden colour, muga is the finest of India's
wild silks.

• The mekhela chadar is a two piece garment with a skirt or lower garment,
called the mekhela and pleated upper garment, called the chadar.

Wildlife
• Assam has five national parks, two of which are
designated World Natural Heritage Sites by
UNESCO, and several wildlife and bird sanctuaries.

• Kaziranga National Park supports the largest


number of one horned rhinos in the Indian
subcontinent.

Temples and Historical monuments


• Kamakhya, Nabagraha, Basistha, Umananda are
some of the famous temples of Assam.

• Rangghar, Asia’s first amphitheatre, at Sivasagar


town exemplifies the best of Ahom architecture.
DESTINATIONS
Tea & Golf
• With more than 800 major and 60,000 small estates,
Assam has the world’s largest concentration of tea
plantations.

• Assam has some 20 ‘tea-tees’ – golf courses in tea


estates – natural and almost all with nine holes.

Adventure
• Assam offers some exciting trekking routes and
rock-climbing spots, white water rafting, canoeing,
kayaking and other water sports.

• The state’s tallest peak Hempieupit is perfect for


trekking.

PROBLEMS OF TOURISM IN ASSAM

 Absence of a Tourism Policy

 Lack of Infrastructure

 Lack of Coordinated Efforts

 Absence of trained Tourist Guides


CONCLUSION & FUTURE SCOPE

Though Assam is richly endowed by nature to


become a spotlight of tourism, but the state has to fill all
the minimum requirements like

• hygienic and comfortable living accommodation.


• good transport system.
• decent shops particularly catering to ethnic art.
• entertainment representing cultural heritage of the
place etc.
