 What is family Planning?
is a conscious decision by individuals or couples
to choose for themselves when to start having
children, how many children to have, how to
space them or when to stop having children by
using (modern) Contraception and natural
methods.
Why use family planning?
Benefits:
Mothers and babies are healthier when risky
pregnancies are avoided.
Smaller families mean more money and food for each
child.
Parents have more time to work and to be with
family.
Delaying first or second pregnancy lets young people
stay in school.
 What are those Contraceptive
Methods?
Barrier methods are either devices (male CONDOMS) that physically
block sperm from reaching an egg, or chemicals (spermicides) that kill
or damage the sperm in the vagina. The effectiveness of barrier
methods greatly depends on people’s ability to use them correctly
every time they have sex
 Condom
Advantages
 Safe, effective and easy to use
 Protects against STI/HIV
 Excellent option for someone who
does not need ongoing contraception
 Does not require a prescription or
medical examination Can be used in
combination with another method

 May cause decreased sexual
sensitivity

and negotiate use with a partner

Is a tablets containing hormones. A woman takes one tablet at
the same time every day to
prevent pregnancy.

Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs or IUCDs) are small,

uterus. The most common IUDs contain copper, and they work
by preventing sperm from reaching an egg. Depending on the
type, IUDs can provide protection for 5 to 12 years

Vasectomy
A doctor makes a small cut in the skin of the scrotum and ties and cuts the
tubes that carry sperm to the penis. A painkiller is given. Now the sperm will
not mix with the semen and not be part of the fluid a man ejaculates during
orgasm. Without sperm, a man cannot get a woman pregnant but will
continue to ejaculate. After the operation, the couple should use another
method for 3 months to ensure there are no sperms coming in the ejaculation
fluid. Is a permanent
