BROADCAST

SYNDICATION
PHILIPPINES
NBA
• Has been in the country for 18 years
through a long-standing partnership with
SOLAR Entertainment which created NBA
channels:
• Basketball TV and NBA Premium TV on Sky
Cable.
NBA
• Studio 23 also aired NBA games in 2013
for free TV coverage.
• Solar Entertainment's
contract with NBA
expired after the 2018-
2019 season.
Looking for a Philippine Home?
• TV5 and ABS-CBN had a joint pitch for
Philippine TV rights of the NBA, but the
two giant networks backed out because
NBA Philippines was asking "the moon
and the stars" for the 2020-2025 seasons.
NBA ASKING FOR TOO MUCH?

• 2019 license fees tripled, broadcast fees

doubled.
DROUGHT
• It resulted to stoppage of Basketball TV
and NBA Premium channels on Sky Cable
last year. No NBA games were temporarily
broadcasted.
WHAT REALLY
HAPPENED?
• The NBA initially offered a renewal last
year, but it was doubling the broadcast
fees - affecting the Free TV broadcasters
to cover expenses through sponsorships
and pay-per-view income.
PLAN B?
• Negotiations were tough but they're still
able to air live games on CNN Philipines,
Facebook and Twitter (Mondays and
Thursdays), an unorthodox move in live
streaming NBA games.
Best one?
• It was not the best one for viewers,
because it needs a lot of data bandwidth.
Thus it needs viewers to fork out money
for load.
FINAL DECISION
• But negotiations were finalized last
November, NBA is paying CNN Philippines
a block-time fee of P500,000 starting Nov
19, 2019.
CNN Philippines
• Airing NBA games on weekends until the
end of the 2019-2020 season (June 2020)
TRUST ISSUES?
• August 7
