Waste heat recovery:

Waste heat recovery methods include capturing and

transferring the waste heat from a process with a gas
or liquid back to the system as an extra energy
source. The energy source can be used to create
additional heat or to generate electrical and
mechanical power.
Factors Affecting Waste Heat Recovery:

 Heat quantity
 Heat temperature/quality
 Composition
•Heat transfer rate in heat exchanger are dependent
on the composition and phase of waste heat stream.
Uses of heat waste recovery:
1.power generation.
2.mechanical power.
3.Water preheating.
4.combustion.
5.boiler preheating.
Sources:
1.Furnace
2.Internal combustion engine
3.Rankine cycle process and air compressor
Types of waste heat recovery:

1.Recupuerators
 Metallic radiation recuperators
 Convective recuperators
 Hybrid recuperators
2.Heat wheel
3.Heat waste recovery with rankine cycle.
1.Recuperator:
 Recuperators recover exhaust gas waste heat in medium to high
temperature applications such as soaking or annealing ovens, melting
furnaces, afterburners, gas incinerators, radiant tube burners, and reheat
furnaces.
 Recuperators can be based on radiation, convection, or combinations.

Parts of recuperator:
1.Pipe
2.Holes
3.Square box
4.Air
5.Gases
Working of Recuperators:
Step-1:Exaust gases coming from process strike the pipes and
goes exit.
Step-2:Exaust gases give energy to the incoming air and after
cool goes exit.
Step-3:Cool air come from atmosphere passing through pipes
after takes energy its becomes hot and goes exit.
Types of Recuperators
A . Metallic radiation recuperators:
a) simplest recuperators.
b) Two metal tubes.
c) Less fuel is burned.
d) Heat transfer mostly by radiation.
Working of metallic radiation recuperators:
Step-1:Hot gases passing through the internal tubes after give
its heat it becomes cool and goes exit.
Step-2:Cool air coming from atmosphere rotate around the
internal tube and after take heat goes exit.
Step-3: The internal tube give its heat to air in the form of
radiation that’s why its called metallic radiation recuperator.
B . Convective Recuperator:
a)There is some small pipes which is fixed inside the
container.
b)Some baffles is used to increase the contact surface.
c) Baffles increases heat exchange.
Working of convective recuperator:
Step-1:Hot gases passing through the tubes which is inside
the container and give its heat and goes exit.
Step-2: Cool air is passing over the tubes takes heat from
tubes and goes exit.
Diagram of convective recuperator:
C . Hybrid recuperator:
The combination of metallic radiation and convective
recuperators is called hybrid recuperators.
Working of hybrid recuperator:
Step-1:Hot gases passing from metallic radiation to
convective recuperator
Step-2:Hot gases passing through the internal tubes after give
its heat it becomes cool and goes exit.
Step-3:Cool air coming from atmosphere rotate around the
internal tube and after take heat goes exit.
Diagram of hybrid recuperator:
2.Heat Wheel
Parts of heat wheel:
1.Upper ducts
2.Lower ducts
3.Wheel
Working of heat wheel:
Step-1:After rotating heat wheel hot gases passing through the
lower ducts after strike the lower side of heat wheel and goes
exit.
Step-2:Hot gases passing through the lower ducts after give
its heat it becomes cool and goes exit.
Step-3: Air passing through the upper ducts after strike the
upper side of heat wheel and goes exit after take its heat goes
exit.
3.Waste heat recovery:
Benefits of waste heat recovery:

A)Direct benefits:
1.Increase efficiency.
2.Reduced cost.

B)Indirect benefits:
1.Reduction in pollution.
2.Reduction in equipment sizes.
