Introduction
The word Tribology is derived from Greek word “TRIBOS” ,means rubbing and
the suffix “logy” means -logia a "study of", "knowledge of".
It was coined by the British physicist David Tabor, and also by Peter Jost in 1964,
a lubrication expert who noticed the problems with increasing friction on
machines, and started the new discipline of tribology.
Why TRIBOLOGY is so important?
Fluid Mechanics: Study of lubricant film formed between various geometric shapes of
rolling/sliding surfaces.
Material Science: Focus is on atomic and micro scales mechanisms whereby solid surface
degradation or alteration occurs during relative motion.

WEAR
What is wear?
It’s the removal of material from a solid surface by the
action of another surface.
LUBRICATION
Why do we need it?
• lower the friction
• prevent wear
