SAMPLING

DISTRIBUTION OF THE
SAMPLE MEAN
Objectives:
• Discuss the concepts relative to sampling distribution of the sample mean
• Find the probability of sample mean
• Construct probability histogram of the sampling distribution of the sample means.
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION

PARAMETER POPULATION POPULATION µ

MEAN

STATISTIC SAMPLE SAMPLE

MEAN
In class of 50 students, a researcher randomly selects 20
students to be the members of a sample. The researcher
computes the mean weight of the sample and compared it
with the mean weight of the whole class. Is the sample mean
equal to the population mean?

The researcher randomly selects another 20 students to

be the members of another sample different from the
previous one. He computed the mean weight of the second
sample. Are the two sample means equal to each other?
•
Example:
Find the total number of possible samples of size 2 from
a population of size 6.

Formula:

Where:
N = Population
n = Sample size
Sampling Distribution
- a sampling distribution is created using sampling
method , particularly random sampling.
There are two ways of creating a sampling distribution.
First, draw sample of the same size from a population
and compute sample statistics. Use descriptive method
to learn more about sampling distribution.
Second relies of probability, the expected values, and
the variance to derive the sampling distribution.
•
Getting Population Parameters
- we can compute population parameters, such as
population mean, population variance, and population
standard deviation.

Where:
μ = population mean
x = random variable
P(x) = probability of the random variable
•
Where:
= population variance
µ = population mean
x = random variable
P(x) = probability of random variable

Where:
σ = Population Standard Deviation
σ² = Population variance.
Example
Let X = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Compute the following:

a. Population mean
b. Population variance
c. Population standard deviation

X 1 2 3 4 5 6
P(x)
Sampling Distribution of the sample mean
- from the population consisting of 6
members (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), we found out earlier
that the total number of possible samples with
two members that can be formed is 15.
EXAMPLE
1. If the population consists of number 1, 2, 3,
4, 5, and 6, find the mean of the sample
size of 3, the variance and standard
deviation. Construct a sampling
distribution.
2. Three balls of different colors are
numbered 1, 2, and 3. Construct a sampling
distribution with n=2. Make a histogram
for this sample distribution.
