Sustainable agriculture in the desert valleys

BACKGROUND
• Project was born in 1976 due to the shortage of energy resources (water,
electricity).

• CHAVIMOCHIC project, has been created to take advantage of the water


potential of the Santa River.

• “La Libertad” was the poorest region in Peru until 1980.

• Budget: $ 1,400,000.00 million


OBJECTIVES

• Creation of irrigation canals in the desert valleys of Chao, Viru, Moche and
Chicama

• Creation of 200 thousand jobs in the La Libertad region

• Take advantage of the flow of the Santa River to generate electricity and
drinking water
STUDY AREA
The project area is located in the coastal zone of Peru from the Santa
River to the city of Ascope.
