Components of
Bluetooth Technology

 Antenna/RF:
The antenna and RF design portion requires a unique
solution for each device
 Bluetooth hardware and firmware (baseband and
Link Controller):
The Bluetooth radio is the hardware transceiver unit
that implements the Bluetooth radio specification.
It consists of :
o Link Controller (LC)
o low-layer link routines

Bluetooth Technology

 Bluetooth software protocol stack:

The Bluetooth software protocol stack can be thought of as driver
code. This code allows the application software to send and
receive information from the Bluetooth module.
o Link Manager (LM)
o the Logical Link Control and Adaptation
Protocol (L2CAP)
o the Host Control Interface (HCI)
o the Service Discovery Protocol (SDP)
o Audio/Telephony Control
o Human Interface Device (HID)
o Other high level protocols
Challenges of Bluetooth
Technology
 Usually single devices are connected-
Although some Bluetooth devices support connecting to more than one
device, most will only pair to a single device.
 Pairing Issues-
In some cases, two devices that are paired will not communicate properly.
 Battery Consumption-
Though Bluetooth devices use very low power, rechargeable devices with
built-in batteries often run out of power and require specialized charging
systems.
 Range-
Although newer Bluetooth devices have longer ranges, many current models
and older devices are limited to a 30-foot radius. This limits Bluetooth usability
for close, room-based networking.
Features of Bluetooth
Technology

 Connectivity:
Bluetooth technology uses radio waves to send
information between two devices that are close to
each other.
 Various applications:
Almost any Bluetooth device can be paired with
another Bluetooth device in order to exchange
information.
 Transfer of data at low energy usage:
Bluetooth low energy is an alternative to the Bluetooth
standard that was introduced in Bluetooth v4.0.
Advantages

 Bluetooth Devices are Wireless-

It improves safety as a result of eliminating the clutter of
wires and associated hazardous connections.
 Bluetooth Technology is Inexpensive-
Bluetooth technology is cheap for consumers and
companies to implement, which results in lower over-
all manufacturing Costs.
 Bluetooth is Automatic-
When two or more Bluetooth devices enter a range (Up to
30 feet) of one another, they automatically begin to
communicate without you having to do anything. The
devices take care of the entire setup process.
Advantages

 Low Energy Consumption-

Bluetooth uses low power signals. As a result, the
technology requires little energy and will therefore use less
battery or electrical power.
 Share Voice and Data-
The Bluetooth standard allows compatible devices to share
both voice and data communications.
 Accessible from Anywhere-
Though Bluetooth has a specific range but we can access it
up to very wide range and can also use it from an
unanticipated range of application from mobiles to
automobiles. The low power consumption, small size and
low cost enables this technology to be used in the tiniest of
devices.
Disadvantages

 Limited ability to connect to Devices-

Bluetooth devices cannot be connected with more than one
devices at a time, as it finds problem in discovering the
intended recipient device in case of point to point connections.
 Low data-rate-
Bluetooth has a low data rate( i.e.1 MBps) in comparison to
infra-red(i.e.4 MBps).
 Spreading of viruses and hacking-
There is a possibility of spreading of mobile and computer
viruses which may damage the device. The devices may also
be hacked with the use of bluetooth hacking softwares.
Applications

 By installing a Bluetooth network in office you can do

away with the complex task of networking between the
computing devices. Each Bluetooth device could be
connected to 200 other devices. It supports both point to
point and point to multipoint connections.
 The Bluetooth technology connects all your peripherals
wirelessly. Connect your pc to printers, scanners and
other devices without the trouble of cable attachments.
You can increase your connections by connecting your
keyboard wirelessly to your computer.
Applications

 If your digital camera is Bluetooth enabled, you can send

videos, images from any location to any location without
the problem of connecting your cameras to the mobile
phone.
 You can connect your wireless headset to your PCs to
your mobile phones or mobile computers to keep your
hands free for more important tasks when you are at the
office or in your car.
Conclusion

 Bluetooth Technology has its share of disadvantages

but the advantages surely win over the limitations
which makes this device very useful and applicable
in our real life to make all the processes easier and
faster.
 The features of this technology enables the device to
be used throughout the world at any place.
 Hence, Bluetooth is another giant gift of technology
to the human beings.
