∙ Rizal left the Philippines for the first time to
Spain. He boarded the Salvadora using a
passport of Jose Mercado, which was procured
for him by his uncle Antonio Rivera, father of
Leonor Rivera. He was accompanied to the
quay where the Salvadora was moored by his
uncle Antonio, Vicente Gella, and Mateo
Evangelista.
11 May

∙ In Singapore, at 2 p.m., Rizal boarded the
boat Djemnah to continue his trip to Spain.
He found the boat clean and well kept.
14 May 1882

∙ On his way to Marseilles, Rizal had a


terrible dream. He dreamed he was
traveling with Neneng (Saturnina) and
their path was blocked by snakes.
 
May 15 1882

∙ Rizal had another disheartening dream.


He dreamed he returned to Calamba
and after meeting his parents who did
not talk to him because of not having
consulted them about his first trip
abroad, he returned traveling abroad
with one hundred pesos he again
borrowed. He was so sad and broken-
hearted. Soon he woke up and found
himself inside his cabin.

∙ Rizal arrived at Punta de Gales. He
wrote on his travel diary: “The general
appearance of Point Galle is
picturesque but lonely and quiet and at
the same time sad”
18 May
1882
∙ At 7:30 a.m., he left Punta de Gales for
Colombo. In the afternoon, Rizal arrived
at Colombo and in the evening the trip
was resumed.

∙ Rizal was nearing the African coast

∙ He landed at Aden at about 8:30
a.m. He made observations at the
time. Aden – city hotter than
Manila; Rizal was amused to see
the camels, for the first time

∙ He arrived at the Suez Canal en route to Marseilles.
∙ City of Suez – the Red Sea terminal of the Suez Canal. Rizal was impressed in
the beautiful moonlight which reminded him of Calamba and his family
∙ Suez Canal – canal which built by Ferdinand de Lesseps (French diplomat-
engineer) which was inaugurated on November 17, 1869
∙ Port Said – the Mediterranean terminal of the Suez Canal

∙ He was quarantined on board the
Djemnah in the Suez Canal.
 
6 June 1882
∙ It was the fourth day at Suez Canal
and was still quarantined on board
the boat.
7 June 1882
∙ Rizal arrived at Port Said. In a letter
to his parents, He described his trip
en route to Aden along the Suez
Canal.
 
11 June
1882
∙ Rizal disembarked and, accompanied
by a guide, went around the City of
Naples for one hour. This was the
first European ground he set foot on.
Rizal was pleased on this Italian City
because of its business activity, it's
lovely people and its panoramic
beauty
12 June 1882
∙ At ten o’clock in the evening, the boat anchored at Marseilles. He
slept board. Rizal visited the famous Chateau d’If, where Dantes,
hero of the Count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned •Rizal stayed
two and a half days in Marseilles.

∙ Early in the morning he landed at
Marseilles and boarded at the Noailles
Hotel. Later he went around for
observation.

∙ His second day in Marseilles.

∙ He left Marseilles for Barcelona in an express
train.
∙ Rizal crossed the Pyrenees and stopped for a day
at the frontier town of Port Bou

∙ At 12:00 noon, Rizal arrived at Barcelona and
boarded the Fonda De España. Rizal’s first
impression of Barcelona, the greatest city of
Cataluña and Spain’s second largest city was
unfavorable
∙ Life in Barcelona. He wrote an essay entitled
“AMOR PATRIO” (Love of Country). His next
article was entitled “LOS VIAJES” (Travels)
and followed by “REVISTA DE MADRID”
(Review of Madrid) but the latter was returned
because the publication was ceased because
of lack of funds.

∙ In a letter, Rizal related to his parents his
experiences during his trip from Port Said
to Barcelona. In the same Letter, he
requested them to send him a birth
certificate and statement showing that
he had parents in the Philippines.

∙ P. Leoncio Lopez of Calamba issued a certified
copy of Rizal’s birth certificate.
20 August
1882
∙ His article "Amor Patrio" was published in the
Diariong Tagalog, a Manila newspaper edited by
Basilio Teodoro. This was the First article he wrote
abroad. 
∙ Amor Patrio (Love of Country) – nationalistic essay,
Rizal’s first article written on Spain’s soil. Under
his pen-name Laong Laan. It was published in two
texts – Spanish and Tagalog – the Spanish text was
the one originally written by Rizal in Barcelona, the
tagalog text was a Tagalog translation made by M.H.
del Pilar
