Continuous Tense
Present Simple Tense
• We use this tense when we talk about:
• 1.  Routines/ habits

e.g. They have breakfast at 7.30. e.g. He wakes up at 7am.


Present Simple Tense
• We use this tense when we talk about:
• 2.  Permanent states

e.g. They don't live in Madrid.  e.g. She doesn't work as a teacher. She
They live in Paris. works as a doctor.
Time expressions: *Adverbs of frequency
-always
-every day/ Monday/ summer/ weekend/ year... -usually
-sometimes
-on Mondays/ Tuesdays... -often
-seldom
-in the summer...
-hardly ever
-at the weekends -never
-twice a week; once in a month...

Present Continuous Tense
• We use this tense when we talk about:
• 1.  Actions happening now

e.g. They are having party at the moment.


e.g. She is running now.
Present Continuous Tense
• We use this tense when we talk about:
• 2.  Actions happening around the time of speaking

e.g. Are you staying with Maria? -No, I am not. 


-I am staying at Tom's house. We are roommates.
Present Continuous Tense
• We use this tense when we talk about:
• 3.  Future arrangements

e.g. Where are you going this weekend? 


-I am flying  to New York.
