COMPETENT STAGE
How to ensure that I’m a competent:
• Must have job-related knowledge
- A competent teacher has full knowledge of the subject matter she teaches and must be
familiar with the curriculum content
- Must have enthusiasm to explore/develop new teaching strategies that will fit the pupil’s level
and pace of learning.
- Must know my own pupils and can evaluate lessons.

• Equip myself with communication skills.


- I must have the ability to communicate well.
- For example, I can handle and use proper communication skills at meetings/seminars with
relative ease.

• Do not depend on other people too much (dependability)


- A teacher who works with minimal supervision and completes assigned tasks within a
specified period is truly an asset to any system.
- A dependent teacher will give full support to every activity and does her best in everything she
does.
- Can also be relied upon to be prompt in schedules such as meetings and appointments.
COMPETENT STAGE
• Have initiative
- shows willingness to assume additional tasks and even volunteers to do other jobs apart from
her regular teaching assignment.
- Have a streak of leadership within and can be independent in doing her job.

• Able to do judgment.
- A competent teacher makes sound and mature decisions
- applies an analytically and a reflective approach to problems.
- uses discretion so as not to jeopardize relations with colleagues and superiors.\

• Able to adapt in different situation


- Have the ease to adapt and adjust to existing situations
- Very open to feedback and new ideas and willingly supports changes when necessary.
- Be flexible to co workers and superiors.
COMPETENT STAGE
• Having Professionalism
- A good teacher adheres to rules, policies, and procedures with the highest degree of
professionalism
- Respects others ideas and opinions and exercises tact in dealing with others.
- Discharges official responsibilities faithfully and devotedly.

• Having Interpersonal skills.


- Have a warm and supportive nature and can work harmoniously with others
- Have the ability to adjust to different personalities and goes for peace
- Respects other cultures and religions.
ROAD TO PROFICIENT STAGE
How to reach proficient stage:
• Turn up to the class
- Do not miss the class unless there is reason that can’t be avoided
- This is the first step to be competent because going into the class to teach in order to gain
experience
- As you have more experience in teaching, you will be able to identify certain problems in
teaching and learning (you will think of ways and explore more on the areas, do
improvements)

• Do reflection after every class


- Reflect on the teaching and learning, jot down the strengths and weaknesses into the RPH,
and identify the solutions to make the next lesson even better (self- improvements)
- Refresh on the concepts and principles that have learnt and apply into the classroom to make
T&L better.
ROAD TO PROFICIENT STAGE
• Participate actively in PLC
- PLC is a method to foster collaborative learning among colleagues
- During PLC, teachers will share their experiences and problems faced during the T&L
- This is the time where teachers can help each others to solve the problems faced during T&L
- As a competent, it is very important to do references based on the suggested ways and
methods in T&L in order to conduct T&L effectively

• Be a good learner in spirit


- Must have faith in your own teaching methods (Don’t compare your teaching with others,
because there is no perfect teaching, everyone have different style in teaching, you have to
identify and choose the best teaching method and style that suits your pupils)
- Must have the spirit in exploring new things that help to be a better teacher (explore more on
others’ teaching methods and do some references)
- Do not stop learning
- “Upgrade” yourself by attending seminars, courses that build your knowledge in teaching

• Take everything as an opportunity
- Have a good mindset is very important
- Less complaint and do work
- Responsibility as a teacher
- Receive the work/ tasks given with open- hearted and take it as opportunity to learn and
become a better teacher
