What is Substance Abuse?

 It is the repeated harmful use of


any substance ,including drugs
and alcohol.
 The substance may be legal,
prescription drugs or banned
substances.
 Abuse can occur when you are
not using a substance the way it
was recommended or because you
are taking more than the
prescribed dosage.
What are these “substances” ?

Marijuana

Pain killers and other tablets.

So never ever start using drugs

 Drug abuse isn't just about street drugs. Besides
marijuana, legal medicines are the most commonly
abused drugs. Drug abuse can lead to cancers.
 Sedatives, help with anxiety, sleep problems, and
some seizures. But if you take more than
prescribed, you can get addicted and result in
breathing problems.
 Sleep medicines if taken longer than what doctor
suggests, you may become dependent and need
them to sleep.
 Pain killers (eg. morphine) if used above
prescribed dose may even lead to death.
ALCOHOL
 Drinking gives your body work to do that
keeps it from other processes. This over
functioning results in damaging the liver.
 Abusing alcohol causes bacteria to grow
in your gut
 Too much is bad for your heart.
 People can develop inflammation of
pancreas.
 Drinking too much puts you at risk for
some cancers
 It can affect your immune system.
SMOKING
 Increases the risk of heart disease,
including stroke, heart attack, vascular
disease, and aneurysm
 Lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis
and emphysema.
 Cigarette smoking has been linked to
about 80 to 90 percent of all cases of lung
cancer.
 Smoking is also associated with cancers
of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus,
stomach, pancreas, cervix, kidney, and
bladder
What Are the Dangers of Secondhand Smoke?

 Secondhand smoke is the smoke that


smokers breathe out and the smoke floating
from the end of the cigarette, cigar, or pipe.
 Secondhand smoke contains thousands of
chemicals that are toxic to the body.
Breathing in secondhand smoke makes you
more likely to have:
 Lung infections
 Asthma
 coughing, sore throats, sniffling, and
sneezing
 cancer
 heart disease
