THE HILLS OF LIMA

1. DESCRIPTION
• The coastal hills of Lima
are oases of greenery. Due
to their extension and
importance within an arid
environment, they could
constitute the greatest
environmental reference
for Lima city.
LOCATION
• The hills of Lima are a valuable natural ecosystem
of more than 30 thousand hectares of extension
that include 19 districts of the capital.

LANGUAGES AND DIALECTS


• Spanish is imposed as a predominant language in Lima
• The Quechua, the variants Oyón Huaura and the
Quechua of Pacaraos-Viscas are spoken in the
provinces of Lima stand out.
• The Cajatambo variant is probably spoken in North
Lima
• Two relatives of Aymara, Jaqaru and Cauqui, are
spoken exclusively in the Yauyos province, south of
Lima.

• The climate is humid with abundant fog
in the capital in the months of June and
October

BIODIVERSITY
• Great variety of insects, birds and flying
mammals that coexist with representative
plant species
• The hills have more than 219 species of
flora. The flower of Amancaes, the begonia,
the wild papaya, the sapote, the tomatillos,
the fruits of cacti, among others.
• 94 of native and migratory fauna, for
example, the Peruvian lizard, coastal jergón,
the vizcacha, the gecko, among others.
3. DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES FOR THE
ECOSYSTEM
• The felling of trees is one of the
factors that affect the ecosystem
• The introduction of invasive species
• The decrease in the water catchment
capacity of the ecosystem
• The disorderly growth of the city
causing invasions
• On the other hand there are also
disorderly tourism
• Entry of four-wheel drive trucks,
grazing and extraction of firewood
• Fires, extraction of construction
material
• Finally, the garbage left by visitors
4. ACTIVITIES TO HELP THE ECOSYSTEM
• Promote the conservation of the hills, disseminating
information about the wonders that exist in this ecosystem
through campaigns and programs in the media.

• Carry out days of reforestation of slopes, attract more


visitors to support the restoration of the ecosystem.

• Defend the hills with the support and movement of


authorities such as the Municipality of Lima to create
conservation areas for these unique ecosystems.

• Improve the quality of life of the populations settled in the


lower part of the slopes, through the generation of
sustainable economic activities.
