Urban

• Urban communities are cities.


• There are lots of people living close
together in a small amount of space.
• There is not very much open space or
natural areas.
Urban

• Transportation
– People often take the bus, train, taxis or
walk
Urban

• Architecture
– Buildings in urban
communities are often very
tall.
– Some buildings are so tall
they seem to touch the sky.
– These are called “
Skyscrapers”.
Rural

• Rural communities are called “the


country” or farmland.
• There are fewer people, more spread out
from one another.
• There is lots of open space and natural
areas.

• Transportation
– People usually must drive to places they
need to visit, because it is too far to walk.
– Sometimes the roads are not paved, so
people need special vehicles, like pick-up
trucks.
– Farms have special types of vehicles, such
as tractors.

– Buildings in rural
communities are more
spread out than in urban
ones.
– It is not unusual to find
only a few buildings
spread out over large
distances.
Suburban

• Suburban communities are usually close


to, but not in, cities.
• There are fewer people than in urban
communities, but many more than in
rural communities.
• Houses are often in neighborhoods and
many people have yards.
• There are many natural areas.
Suburban

• Transportation
– People in the suburbs often drive, but
sometimes walk or take the bus.
– Sometimes people will take trains into the
city.
Suburban

• Architecture
– Often, homes in suburban communities have
only one family living in them.
– Sometimes families live in apartments. They
are not skyscrapers.
Children

• Urban, Rural and Suburban Children all
