BASIC CONCEPTS OF 5S

• TheJapanese Art of Good Housekeeping


• The 5S is simply derived from the five
Japanese words, Seiri, Seiton, Seiso,
Seiketsu and Shitsuke.

• 5S is the foundation for IMPROVEMENT.

• 5S is not simply a matter of cleaning up.


This even includes the psychological effects
to persons in the clean place.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF 5S

• Most of us think that housekeeping is done


by somebody who assigned to do the task.
Housekeeping is everybody’s concern.

• 5S is not just giving importance to how clean
things appear but the importance of
everyone’s attitude towards cleaning.

A 3rd class workplace:


has people who make a mess and no one
cleans up.

A 2nd class workplace:


has people who make a mess and another
group of people clean up.

A 1st class workplace:


has people who don’t make a mess and
yet everyone cleans up.

What do we usually do in the 1st S (Sort) ?

1. Sort items through its priority use


2. Stratify management; Waste elimination
and dealing witch causes
3. Remove unnecessary items and
dispose item properly according to
private, organizational policies and
procedures
4. Designate a place of items for discard/
disposal while documents are prepared
What do we usually do in the 2nd S (systematize) ?

1. Look for functional storage where items


could be placed.
2. Provide cabinet, shelves, rack, etc.
3. Arrange necessary items in good order so
that these can be easily found or pick up for
use.
4. Label all items (individual folder/group of
folders/per shelf)
What do we usually do in the 3nd S (Sweep) ?

1. Clean your workplace completely


> Cleaning as a way of purifying the Spirit
> Cleaning as inspection
2. Clean area/workshop/office environment, this
includes repair and painting exteriors, interiors,
machines and equipment
3. Include part of neighbor’s area in sweeping
4. Clarify checkpoint for process and results
5. Upgrade manual processing with automation IT
What do we usually do in the 4th S (Standardize) ?

1. Implement the first 3 S everyday, by doing so you are


maintaining high standard of housekeeping and
workplace organization at all times.
2. Centralize necessary files, data and materials for use
3. Implement cleaning/maintenance schedule, work
process and procedures
4. Enhance schedule, work process & procedure
5. Make information visible.
What do we usually do in the 5th S (Self-discipline) ?

1. Habit formation
2. Do things spontaneously without being told
or ordered
3. Keep rules and standards in place
4. Observe office procedures at all times
5. Develop multiple skills
