Sequence Signals or
Lesson Connectors
1
What I Need to Know
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to take note of sequence signals or
connectors to determine patterns of idea development in a given text.
Specifically, after going through this module, you will be able to:
1. Understand and know the importance of sequence signals or connectors in writing.
2. Identify the different connectors.
3. Classify connectors according to how it is used.
4. Bring structure and clarity to a text read with the knowledge of connectors.

What’s In
Hello! The lesson that we are going to tackle in this module is about taking note of sequence
signals or connectors to determine the patterns of idea development in a selection. Before
that, let us recall our previous knowledge about connectors and sequence signal words.

Connectors Words that are used to link two or more ideas.

words or phrases that introduce a clause or
Sentence Connectors
sentence and serve as transition between them.

1ix
What’s New

After recalling our previous knowledge about connectors, we will now start the focus
lesson in this module. First, let us do an activity:

List down at least ten connectors that are used in the development of the selection.

Last year, I visited China capital to attend a business conference. While I was there, I
decided to visit the supermarket selling exotic animals. To start off, my flight was
delayed. Next, the airline lost my luggage, so I had to wait for two hours at the airport while
they tracked it down. Unexpectedly, the luggage had been set aside and forgotten. As soon
as they found my luggage, I found a taxi and rode into Wuhan town. During the ride into
town, the driver told me about his last visit to the supermarket. After I had arrived safely,
everything began to shatter. The people panicked because of novel corona virus, and I
thoroughly understand its danger if I will stay. Finally, I caught my flight back to the
Philippines before the lockdown thing. Luckily, everything went smoothly. I arrived home just
in time to be reunited with my family and able to kiss them goodnight.

What Is It
What have you noticed with your answers? What is their function in the
presentation of ideas in the selection? Did they help you to follow the writer’s thoughts? Did
they aid you understand better the selection? Do you think sequence signal words
important?

A.
Words that indicate an order or time in which
Sequence Signal words
something is going to happen

Some examples of this type are enumerated below:

2
x
First Not long after At last
Second Today Now
Third Tomorrow Before
Next Once After
Meanwhile Soon While
On (date) Final(ly) Then
Later

Task 1

Fill in the blanks with the most suitable sequence connectors from the brackets.

1. My sister was in the dentist’s office for ten minutes. ______, I sat in the waiting room with
an old magazine in my hands. (First, Meanwhile, Later)

2.An hour passed but there was no sign of Mike. ______, we decided to go home.
(Until, Before, Finally)

3. We bumped into Salsa during our trip to Lang Island. A few weeks ______, we met him
again (after, then, later)

Sequencing Steps - Sequencing refers to the order in which events in a narration

happened.

The following are some of the most common words and expressions which are used
to sequence a story:

Firstly Firstly, I began my education in London.

First of all First of all, I opened the cupboard.
Beginning To start off To start off with, we decided our destination was New
with York.
Initially Initially, I thought it was a bad idea.
Then, But then Then, I started to get worried.
After that After that, we knew that there would be no problem!
Next Next, we decided on our strategy.
Continuing
As soon as + As soon as we arrived, we unpacked our bags.
Full clause
Immediately Immediately, I telephoned my friend Tom.
Finally Finally, I flew to London for my meeting with Jack.
In the end In the end, he decided to postpone the project.
Ending
Eventually Eventually, we became tired and returned home.
Lastly Lastly, we felt we had enough and and went home

In reading narrations, it is important to take note of these expressions since they help
you improve your ability to comprehend and to follow the ideas presented by the writers.

within sentences. Here are some examples:
