Vocabulary
5 W’s plus HOW are used to help answer questions about a text - WHO, WHAT,
WHEN, WHERE, WHY
Context Clues - clues readers use to find the meaning of unknown words
Inference - using clues to make a good guess
Main idea - what the story is mostly about
Sequencing - putting the events of a story in order
Central Message/Theme - what the author is trying to teach you
Summarize/Retell - state the most important details in the story; use
keywords, such as SOMEBODY, WANTED, BUT, SO, THEN
Close Reading - reading to uncover layers of meaning that lead to deep
understanding
Character Traits - descriptive words used to describe the qualities of a
person; can be physical traits or personality traits
Comparison and Contrast - focus on the ways in which certain things or
or ideas - usually two of them - are similar and different.
