STRESS
Is simply a reaction to a stimulus that
disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium.
A stressful event can trigger the “flight or
fight” responses.
Hormonal changes such as adrenaline and
cortisol to surge through the body.
Types Of Stressors (Eustress Vs.
Distress)
•Dr. Lazarus (building on Dr. Selye's
work) suggested that there is
a difference between:
• Eustress, which is a term
for positive stress, and 
•Distress, which refers to negative

characteristics:
•Motivates, focuses energy.
•Is perceived as within our coping abilities.
•Feels exciting.
•Improves performance. 
•Is short-term.

characteristics:
Causes anxiety or concern.
Can be short- or long-term.
Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities.

Can lead to mental and physical problems.

stressors
