Media Literacy
• Media is the main means of mass
communication (broadcasting, publishing, and
the internet) regarded collectively.
• The word "literacy" usually describes the
ability to read and write.
• Media literacy education is intended to promote
awareness of media influence and create an
active stance towards both consuming and
creating media.

What is Media Literacy?


Media literacy consists of 3 main stages.
• The first stage is for a person to become
aware of all the media they consume in their
day-to-day lives and manage this.
• The second stage is to develop critical
thinking
• The final stage of media literacy is to
consider who is creating the media we
experience every day.

3 stages of Media Literacy


• Media literacy is about helping students
to become competent and critical in the
various media forms so that they are well
equipped to control the interpretation of
what they observe and hear instead of
letting the interpretation to control them.

Importance of Media Literacy


Media can be classified into three (3)
types:
• Print Media (Newspaper, Magazine)
• Broadcast Media(Tv, Radio)
• Internet Print Media

Types of Media Literacy


Print Media (i) Newspaper
• Newspaper is a major source of information for a
large Number of readers. It may be national or local,
daily or weekly newspaper
Magazine
• A Magazine is a specialized advertising media that
serves educational, informational, entertainment and
other specialized needs of consumers, business and
industries.

(i) Television advertising
• Tv is a principal source of information and
entertainment for people exposed to mass
media.
(ii) Radio
• Radio is a premier mass medium for users
and advertisers

Broadcast Media
Internet
• internet is a worldwide medium that
provides means of exchanging information
through a series of interconnected
computers

- Enables audience members to develop independent
judgmentsabout media content
2. Understanding the Process of Mass Communication
- If we know the process, we can form expectations of how
they can serve us
3. Awareness of the impact of media on individual and
society
- If we ignore the impact of media, we risk being caught up
and carried along by that change rather than controlling it

4. Strategies for Analyzing
- If we make meaning, we must possess tools with which
to make fit
5. Media Content that provides insight to our culture
-We know a culture and its people by the use of
communication
6. Ability to enjoy and appreciate media content
-Media Literacy is not about always being suspicious of
harmful effects
-We take college classes to enhance understanding &
appreciation of novels

- Many professions now employ some form of media
- For use in training
- To enhance presentations
- To keep clients/costumers
8. Ethical and Moral obligations of media
practitioners
-We must understand the media’s official and unofficial
rules of operation in order to make informed judgments
about the performance of the media

Why we use Media in
Education?
• The use of social media in education provides
students with the ability to get more useful
information, to connect with learning groups and
other educational systems that
make education convenient.
• Media Literacy education – which teaches
students to apply critical thinking to media
messages and to use media to create their own
messages
