NEWS WIRE
1 - CARS, OTHER VEHICLES MAY GET COSTLIER FROM JANUARY; AUTOMAKERS MAY
SUFFER THIS MUCH LOSS IN FY 21.

23rd Dec 20 - Financial Express

Wholesales of 2-wheelers may drop up to 18 per cent; 3-wheelers up to 73 per cent; and commercial
vehicles may drop up to 30 per cent in FY21.

On the other hand, tractors have been the best performing segment in FY21 so far as a resilient rural
economy has spurred demand for this agricultural machinery this year.
It is expected that the domestic wholesales of tractors will grow up to 16 per cent in FY21.

Gauging the growth of the automotive sector is important as it has linkages with multiple industries.
Manufacturing vehicles require steel, iron, aluminium, paint, plastic, glass, leather, electronics,
rubber, etc. Alongside, this sector is a significant contributor to the banking/NBFC industry in the
form of automobile financing, which is one of the most common forms of retail loans.
The sector is also one of the largest spenders on advertising and among the main end-users of oil and
gas. The automotive sector’s vast value chain present across the entire Indian economy contributes
nearly 40 per cent to India’s manufacturing GDP. Hence, this sector has the potential to bring
inclusive growth and community development, along with job creation. Meanwhile, the automobile
OEMs, dealers, and ancillaries suffered Rs 2,300 crore loss per day and an estimated job loss of about
3.5 lakh during the lockdown.
2 - GOVERNMENT INVITES PROPOSALS FOR SETTING UP ELECTRONIC
CHIP PLANTS IN INDIA, ACQUISITION ABROAD

17TH DEC - economictimes

The government has invited proposals from entities to set up electronic chip
manufacturing units in the country and even acquire any company making
semiconductors overseas.
The expression of interest floated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information
Technology (Meity) on Tuesday said that the government is keen to incentivise and
attract investment in setting up semiconductor fabrication units in India.
Meity has fixed January 31, 2021 as the last date for submitting the proposal.
Meity said the need to set up semiconductor plants assumes significance in view of the
fact that India is poised to increase its share in global manufacturing of mobile phones,
IT hardware, automotive electronics, industrial electronics, medical electronics, IoT and
other devices in the near future as it aspires to have USD 400 billion of electronics
manufacturing by the year 2025.
Contd.

The government had approved two semiconductor units in 2013 with an investment of
around Rs 63,000 crore. However, both the units could not be set-up due to lack of
electronics manufacturing ecosystem in the country and policy-linked market support.
Along with the production linked incentive scheme for electronics manufacturing, Meity
had announced the scheme for promotion of manufacturing of electronic components and
semiconductors (SPECS) as well with a budget outlay of Rs 3,285 crore spread over a
period of eight years but no electronic chip manufacturer has shown interest in the
scheme yet.
3 - INDIA COULD EMERGE AS ALTERNATIVE FOR INVESTMENT IN
ELECTRONICS IN NEAR TO MEDIUM TERM

16th Dec 20 - economictimes

India might emerge as an alternative destination for new planned

investments in the electronics sector in the near to medium term.
The report said countries such as China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia
are low cost manufacturing destinations and manufacturers in these
regions have an edge over Indian companies.
The three largest export markets of India for computers and hardware
are the US (31%), Singapore (12%) and UAE (7%), while France, Germany
and Netherland constitute another 9% of export demand.
Contd.

The report says India’s electronics production has increased from Rs 1,903 billion in FY15
to an estimated Rs 5,465 billion during FY20, at a compound annual growth rate of about
23%. It grew by around 20% in FY20. As per Government estimates, demand for
electronics hardware is expected to increase to $ 400 billion by 2025, whereas in FY20
production stood at $ 77 billion. Currently, the domestic production meets close to 60%
of the domestic consumption demand.
China meets 37% of India’s import demand for electronics components, 40% of telecom
instruments, 46% of computer hardware, peripherals and 29% of electronics instruments.
The sector was initially impacted from the shutdown of factories in China during February
to March 2020 and had to bear the brunt of domestic lockdown and subdued demand. The
COVID-19 outbreak in China considerably impacted the mobile phone industry.
4 - XIAOMI RAMPS UP SMART TV PRODUCTION IN INDIA, TO LAUNCH
QLED TV LATER THIS MONTH

16th Dec 20 - economictimes

Chinese tech major Xiaomi on Monday said it has partnered with Hyderabad-
based Radiant Appliances as it ramps up production of its smart TVs in the
country. The move comes ahead of Xiaomi's foray into the premium QLED TV
segment in India.

While Nilakantan did not disclose details of the pricing, he said the first 55-
inch QLED TV will be launched on December 16.

QLED (Quantum Light-Emitting Diode) TVs are like regular LED TVs but offer
better colour and brightness than LED.
Contd.

He noted that the QLED market in India is at a nascent stage, accounting for about 0.5
per cent (about 60,000 units) of the 12 million units TV market in India.
"The QLED TV for India has been built ground up here, keeping in mind the needs of
customers here... We are hopeful that we will be able to double the market of QLED TVs
in the next one year," Nilakantan added.
The report had noted that smart TV was the fastest-growing segment, growing 25 per
cent year-on-year.
The smart TV market in India was mostly driven by brands like Xiaomi, Samsung, and
emerging tail brands such as TCL, Vu and others, which are leveraging their growing
channel presence both online and offline to target new users and upgrade users, the
report added.
5 - INDIA CAN BECOME GLOBAL LEADER IN ADVANCED
MANUFACTURING

15TH DEC 20 - financialexpress

N Chandrasekaran, chairman, Tata Group , said on Saturday that India today has an
opportunity to become a global leader in research and development, science and
technology, and most importantly in AI, advanced manufacturing and, therefore, the next
set of products and services.

He said India has often struggled to grow manufacturing as a percentage of GDP and has
highlighted issues like power, logistics, labour, high interest rates and regulatory overreach
and interference for the same. However, in the future, he said, this needs to be put behind
and the industry needs to start acting by visioning at scale to become a pivot to the new
world order.

“If you have to realise the idea that 2020s belong to India, we need a new focus on talent,
we need to enable data and bandwidth and we need to be part of the new regulatory
standards,” he said.
Contd.

Chandrasekaran also said that there has to be a collaborative role between the industry
and the government. While the industry should be bold and start visioning all project at
scale, the government should enable this partnership and made India ready to participate
in this new world. “It (government) should ensure that every village has sufficient
bandwidth, affordable data and establish the regularory standards that are required on
data privacy, data residency, data localisation and taxation in general,” he said.
He also highlighted that if India’s first plan for 21st century’s growth is digital, the
second plan is the new approach to global value chains.

giving indirect employment.

Samsung currently makes more than 70 percent of the total display products used in TVs,
mobile phones, tablets, watched, etc., in the world in South Korea, Vietnam and China.
Contd.

The South Korean major recently told the government that it will start TV production in
Chennai by December 2020.

8 - COPPER DEMAND FROM ELECTRIC VEHICLE SEGMENT ACCELERATING

10th Dec - Auto ET

Greater use of electric vehicles and expansion of renewable energy capacity to cut
noxious emissions will mean accelerating demand growth for copper in coming
years which will sustain prices.

Highlighting the energy transition was Chinese President Xi Jinping, who recently
pledged to steer the country to "carbon neutrality" by 2060 and U.S. President-
elect Joe Biden pledging $2 trillion to help cut emissions.
The European Union too is aiming for net-zero by 2050.
Stringent targets for cutting carbon emissions cannot be met without electric
vehicles and renewable energy from wind and solar farms, which need copper
favoured in applications that conduct electricity.
Contd.
CRU analyst Charlie Durant expects total copper demand from the electric vehicle sector
to rise to nearly 1.5 million tonnes in 2025 and to 3.3 million tonnes by 2030 from under
500,000 tonnes this year.
Expectations are for global copper demand to rise to more than 26 million tonnes in 2025
from around 23 million tonnes this year, and much of that growth will come from
renewable energy and electric vehicles.
Citi forecasts prices to hold around $7,000 a tonne between 2021 and 2025 compared
with an average of $6,050 this year.

said it is more than Rs 30,000 crore, of which edible oil business contributes around Rs 24,000
crore.
The company will continue to have double-digit growth, Mallick said, adding that the growth
in food business would be higher than in edible oils. Accordingly, he said the share of food
business in the overall turnover will rise gradually.
Mallick noted that consumers’ preferences are changing towards packed food items. Edible oil
prices have risen by 20 percent since April due to fundamental reasons and not because of
speculations, he said, adding that globally in many countries the crops were affected.
10 - TESLA TO BUILD 'WORLD'S LARGEST' BATTERY PLANT NEAR
BERLIN

6th Dec - Auto ET

Tesla Boss Elon Musk said Tuesday that he plans to build the world's largest
battery-cell factory at the group's electric car plant near Berlin.
Tesla has already started construction on a huge "gigafactory" in a forested area
in Gruenheide, south of the German capital, due to open next year.
The factory is Tesla's first in Europe and is expected to churn out 500,000 Model 3
sedans and Model Y SUVs per year.
Musk announced his ambitious target on the same day he became the world's
second-richest person, according to Bloomberg, overtaking Microsoft founder Bill
Gates, after Tesla touched a market valuation of $500 billion.
Musk added that local residents, some of whom took Tesla to court for felling
trees to make way for the plant, won't experience "detectable amounts of toxins
in the air" because of battery production at the factory.
