Elementary Terminologies
• Node/Workstation:
– A node is any device connected to a computer
network. Nodes can be computers, cell phones,
printers, or various other network appliances. Nodes
are also called as workstations.
– Any device becomes a node or workstation when it is
connected to a network and share resources.
• Server
– The term server refers to the computer that facilitates
the sharing of hardware (printer, modem, etc.) and
software (files, programs, etc.) on the network.
Types of Server
1. Non-Dedicated Server
This server has a dual job (i.e., it works as a server and
workstation) to facilitate the sharing of resources
among the workstations.
– It is used in a small network.
– Network using dedicated server is known as Peer-to-
Peer Network
2. Dedicated Server
This type of server is reserved for doing server’s job.
It does not work as a workstation.
– It is used in a large network.
– Network using non-dedicated server is known as
Master-Slave network.
